Oil Cooler Confusion

I did a search for "oil cooler routing" and "oil line routing" but am drawing a blank.

When I bought my '80, the engine had already been replaced at some point with a "beehive" motor, and I am wanting to run a real oil cooler.

My problem is that I cannot find where the oil lines ran to, and am confused about where they go. I know the one goes from the cooler to the front cover, and the other one goes to *somewhere* on the engine. I'm looking at my new filter pedestal, and I'm assuming it doesn't run to the filter pedestal.

My question is, where do I route all the oil lines to? I'm planning on making my own lines and buying an aftermarket oil cooler. I read that I need 18x1.5 fittings.

At this point, all I have is the filter pedestal. Am I better off buying all factory parts (lines, cooler, banjo bolts etc)?

the upper line on the fmoc runs to the front cover and the lower line runs to the rear iron. a 24mm (if i remember correctly) banjo bolt will hold the line to the engine. you'll just see a hard line running from that location to the front cover if you have a beehive oil cooler on your engine. in this pic of a 13B (that i recently freshened up and installed in my 85 GS), you'll see the line running from the location i describe. the line was cut when the engine was removed..and no i did not remove th engine. i bought it as you see it.

So if I just cut the hard line and make my own lines, I just can splice the oil cooler in to that line, correct?

Please don't use that. It's much easier to go to the wreckers and find a filter pedestal and just run the lines as they should be.

Waste of money and time. Find the stock parts and read my install in the archives.

Actually I had your install how-to thread already saved to my favorites since I first bought my car.

I have the filter pedestal already. I suppose it would be easier to just run the proper lines. Cheaper too.

Yep, I tend to be a tightass so that writeup was designed to be the most cost effective option.

So my first question still stands, I can just splice an oil cooler into that line that already runs from the rear iron to the front cover, correct?

probably not without it leaking. they need to be high pressure lines with the appropriate ends on it.

I'm thinking I'll get the proper pipe-threaded fittings from a hydraulics shop and make my own high-pressure lines.
