yeah of course, it needs oil for lubrication. The thing that is different is rotaries are HARD on oil.. So besure to change it often, unles you have a perpetual oil change car thats so bad you have to keep adding oil then only change the filter once every 3 months LOL

if the filter is upside down it will create some suction that holds oil in the filter
pokeing the hole will relive this suction and let it fall

just do it.. youll save yourself sooo much trouble. my dad did it once and he said it was the biggest pain in the ***. there is oil inside. just like someone said, its a suction.

ok, if you dont understand, do this.

fill a bucket or large object up with water. take a cup and let it get full of water at the bottom of the bucket. now pull it up upside down. when the rim of the cup gets above the water, all of it will fall out of the cup since there is a suction holding it in. same principle. if that makes sence. all of the oil will come out of the filter all over the engine bay. i mean, if you dont care about oil everywhere, i guess it wont hurt anything, but it will make the biggest mess.

I usually take a rag and wrap it around the oil filter neck, just under the oil filter. Then I drain the oil at the plug. Take off the filter and clean the surface of where the filter gasket meets the filter neck. Make sure there's a bead of oil around the gasket of the new filter. Just hand tighten it. Put the drain plug back in and add about 4 quarts of new oil. Check the oil level and add more if you need it. Most turbo cars should have their oil changed at 1,000 to 1,500 miles and normal N/A rotaries at no more than 3,000. Rotaries run extremely hot so oil viscosity breakdown can occur a lot quicker. If you live in a hot climate it would be better to change your oil a lot more frequently.

When changing oil , take a nail or screw and poke a few holes in the top of the filter. Then open the oil drain, it will drain the oil from the oil pan as well as allow oil to settle out of the filter, so when you remove it you dont have a 1/2 quart of oil all over your motor

I use the K&N oil filter and I believe it has a oil relief valve so that it dosent have the suction. I have never had a problem with very much oil at all coming out. usually just a very small trickel.

ok, this will probably confuse people more, but I'll throw in my experience. I didn't poke a hole the last time I changed the filter to see what would happen. If you slowly unscrew it a few turns and leave it for a moment you'll hear all the oil drain out of it, then you can just take it off the rest of the way. So *technically* you don't have to poke the hole.

but, umm....(and im new here so please forgive...)...wouldnt taking off the oil filler cap achieve the same purpose, since its higher in elevation than the filter?

You'd think but it doesnt work that way... Maybe the fact that all the other stuff is in the path, a few poke holes is a direct approach to it...

On my last oil and filter change, I didn't spill a drop from the filter. I was really carefull and rotated the engine by hand slightly to let the oil in the pedastal drain down as I lifted the filter off the threaded part. I guess I was compensating for the time I made a mess, even with a rag wrapped around the pedastal.
