Oil change messy?

Ok, my oil filter is not the usual way i have seen on other makes of cars. I don't know if for every year of 7 they did this. My oil filter is vertical so wouldn't all the oil spill out when i take it off? Or does it drain every time the car is off?

take a screwdriver and poke 4 holes in the top before you take the oil pan plug out. wait a few minutes for the oil to finish draining. now you should have no problem taking it off w/o making a mess.

yep, all RX-7's are like that, great, isn't it?

There won't be any oil in it to drain out. You may spill 3 drops at the most.

I changed the oil on mine last weekend, and can feel you pain.

I got a little more that three drops out of it, I’ll defiantly try poking holes in the filter, great tip speckamp!

I use a very sharp punch so that the hole doesn't tear and
get metal into the inside of the oil filter. I do it the night
before on a hot engine and change the oil in the morning.

No muss, no fuss.

I usually change the oil on a hot engine, and crank with the coil disconnected aftter most of it has drained to get everything out of the oil pump and lubircation system. Then I deal with the filter... I usually dont get much that drains out of the filter, unles it's a car where the filter mounts sideways or upside down.

I just use the hole punching trick after running my engine for a few minutes, and I have never spilled more than a drop or two.
