My rear plate was off, so I could take the iron in to get welded. What was the plan for the engine? Is it a used one you are going to install? Pulled out for a rebuild? If the engine is getting torn down, I'd just get another iron. Otherwise I guess you'll have to have it fixed if it is a known good engine.

just weld it right back in.. it doesnt reinforce the rear plate that much... if youre running an na rx then you practically dont even need that part... it just helps hold the motor to the tranny. glue, duct tape, zip ties, small welds: all good!
one caution: when you weld it, dont put TOO much heat on it, youll warp the rear iron and melt the coolant seals, at which point the engine WILL need rebuilding. try some large tacks on the parts furthest from the engine proper.

i think i would rather put in my spare engine in
and see what i can do in the mean time
well, if you got a spare engine use it!
if you got the time to haul the core and bit to a good shop do it.
if you're on the side of the highway, miles from home and some creepy guy is touching you in ways you dont like bolt it the hell up and be gentle on the clutch

When you get that welded, make sure the person that is doing it preheats the iron, a metal box of sand is best, you heat the whole box sand and all and get the iron temp up, that reduces the amount of stress on the surrounding material. Once the weld is done, keep the box and iron hot and allow it to cool slowly. Nickel welding rod is the only thing to use, if they try to use a wire feed (MIG) SLAP them and go somewhere else because they don't know what their doing.
Pay the money
If it's import I would pay the money to have it done right. Cast iron is not easy to weld back strong. It should be angle ground and there should be a root pass before the fill. If it's important.
Good luck!

My 1/2 bp is running around the same way, just not quite as big a chunk broke off though.
I had a 2nd gen 13b engine hanging from the ceiling hoist in the shop one day and the opposite corner, the one with the loop for the chain, broke. The 2 of us working on the engine stepped back and watched the engine do a lovely 1-1/2 back gainer, on the way to the floor. You should have seen the stupidly shocked looks on our faces.
If you are not putting out high hp, or track racing on a regular basis, use it as it is.

i thinking about another problem too
since that hole is going to hold one screw
and if the welding job wasn't done well
the screw will not go in right
and it will make no different from leaving it the way it is now
