The Official WTH is this? thread. (w/ Pics)

ive never owned a rotary before, and there are more wires in this car than ive ever seen in a pre 90's car before (my supra had half as many wires, the harness can actually fit through the firewall.

i checked the wiring diagrams (that i have downloaded), and im just wondering what they do, i have never seen these types of cables in cars before, it resebles an old school computer cable...well its insulated like one atleast.

they connect undernieth the driver seat, but i couldnt follow them back, i didnt see them at all after the storage bins. they come from the center council/ dash area.

i am sure i wont be the only one who has questions about misc. stuff like this. and i can pretty much garuntee this wont be my last.

Thanks,
Rich

Stereo hookups for amps and little joystick thingee in SE's. Doubt you'll ever use em unless you're looking for the sweet sound of mid 80's car audio technology!

I thought that maybe soo... its just the only speakers that came with the car are the under dash ones...

yay yay yay, i get to tear those out! that also explains why i didnt find them in the wiring diagram, i didnt bother to check the stereo section out lol!

i will probably have more to ask tomorrow when i start wiring the 13b in or tearing the 13b down for a rebuild... idk what im going to do yet.

just wanted to add that the joystick balance control (fader) came standard with the ETR stereo and was available on the S and GS but standard on the GSL and GSL-SE.

Those are DIN connectors, by the way... father of the original keyboard connectors for the PC, and great grandad of the mini-DIN connectors used for keyboards and mice until USB took over.

They were real common on high-end and pro audio equipment interconnect through the 70's and 80's. Originally a european standard.

yup joystick sucks ***...lol they're often very loose so they'll switch over with every bump plus if you give your friends rides for the first time that's the first thing they play with..so i took it off and that's where i'm running the plug for my MP3 adapter.

i knew it was related to pc cables. i had an oldschool computer that was in a closet that i took apart for the hell of it.

the gauge of the pins also seemed way to big for just sending a signal to a light or something.

thanks great information.

okay i have another couple of questions. My 13b is out of a 87 GXL and i am using the 12a tranny. do i have to use a 12a flywheel and clutch? my experience is telling me so... but i am not for sure.

also, i was reading about these engines haveing rear counterwieghts, my engine didnt have one?
on a plus side, the engine is super clean. all the stationary gears are in great shape, the bearings have <10% copper showing.

now i did not clean any of this yet... i am really impressed with this engine, mild carbon build up, apex seals look good but im going to have to measure them just to make sure.

You have to use the flywheel that corresponds to the engine rotating assembly. In this case a 13B flywheel and the clutch/pressure plate from a second gen non-turbo. All 83-92 Non-Turbo use a 225mm clutch/flywheel. 1982 and prior 215mm clutch/flywheel.

This link from MazdaTrix will help. http://www.mazdatrix.com/faq/flywheel.htm
