O2 sensor

I'm in the dark on this subject. I'm conderned about my fuel mixture setting and don't know how to go about adjusting or reading the correct mixture. Is hooking up a O2 sensor (bung to exhaust with gauge) over kill for what I want to do? I know a lot of guys will use this set up to play around with carb jetting - any advice much appreciated
