The number 1 reason I still drive my 7.
Alrighty then. Everyone post why they still drive their 7. Just post the most important reason.
Mine is reliability. In the 10+ years I have logged about 200k personally in my 3 7's. Comined, my 3 cars total over 500k miles. One engine was destroyed when my grandfather overheated it (water pump at 210k miles w/rust for water) until it stalled and filled it with water. One engine when I hit a huge palette and the shock of hitting my pan blew a seal (182k miles). One was totalled at 140 k. None of my 7's have actually ever left me stranded (cept for once my start died at 230k). Not a single tranny or rear end problem. All of my friends laugh at me for owning such an old car, but they all call me to come help them when they break down. I drive it 1500 miles a month and I have no reservations about driving anywhere.

I liked them from the day they came out, but figured I'd never be able to afford one. Still can't afford a new one, but they certainly are inexpensive when they quit running. Used parts are plentiful, as are parts cars. And when you consider the fact that Mazda built them out of the parts bin, they are quite capable. Worth much more than the sum of their parts.

Because I wouldn't know who I am anymore if I didn't.... seriously. This is more than my transportation, or even my hobby.... it's a large part of who I am. (that is the part that some people find very difficult to understand)
That said, my RX-7 is currently in storage (as of last weekend). School is starting up again, and I am determined to keep her beautiful and in tip-top condition, even if that means I don't get to drive her.
Of course, I think about her more often than almost anything else... so I think I'm definitely "still driving her" in the sense you're talking about, even though she's 6 hours away at my parents' house.

Rx-7s have sex appeal, especially the 2nd gens. The rotary engine is a pure work of art, and you have to feel like part of an elite group knowing how it works and owning one.

My dad has had a 7 ever since i was born, and i loved the way that car purred when you where coasting. So when the time came and he wouldn't give me that car, i found mine at a junkyard, rebuilt it, and now it fits me like a glove, handles like a dream, and is my pride and joy.

Iit's a lifestyle.
The number one reason why I like them...is because great learning experience. People are so misinformed about the rotary engine, I enjoy spreading the love for it.

I love my car too damn much. It may not be the fastest, or the best looking, but it's got character. Something most other cars seriously lack.
I was thinking about selling it to my stepdad (not all that bad, considering he loves the car almost as much as me, used to have one, helps me work on it, and has more money to spend on it) this summer and buying a 1st gen DSM. But everytime I got in and fired her up, I fell in love all over again. I didn't know a damn thing about cars before I got her, since then she's taught me very much. Went through a carb rebuild, engine swap, ignitor replacement, brakes pads, rats nest removal, clutch replacement. All within 1 year.
What other car can you buy for 1000 dollars that is anywhere near as enjoyable as ours? My baby has never left me stranded (drove her home from the last of school after I blew 3 apex seals on the front rotor, albeit slow as ****.) I have yet to see anything so easy to work on, or so plentifull at junkyards.
What other group of enthusiast take pride in great billows of smoke coming out of their exhaust (MMO/ATF treatment.) Backfires at will, removal of emmission equipment, junkyard gold, and ghetto rigged ignition systems? You have to love an engine that gets stronger when you put holes in it. This forum itself is another reason I still drive my car. That and my car is such a damn cutey. I love it.
P.S. I think the interior layout is ******* perfect....cept for maybe the buttons on the center console.

Leshrak - I understand the wanting a 1st gen DSM. I have a 93 Eagle Talon myself in addition to my '82 7. Here's the point though. Notice I said MY 7. The Talon is now my wife' car. I hate the way the shifting seems so loose compared to my 7, and the steering, although powered, is still not as tight. I could go on, but you get the point. I'm driving a car 11 years older than the one I used to drive that is now my wife's and I don't regret it a bit.

Yes I agree, I drove one around (AWD, turbo Talon) for a bit when I was on vacation. I enjoyed the power, and the AWD would be a great help in the Colorado snow. It took me a while to realize it, but the connection with the car just isn't there.
When I drive my 7......... everythings perfect. It goes exactly where I want it to, it feels perfect.... shifting, gas, clutch, brake, steering.... all of that stuff isn't even of concern.
Every car I've driven just isn't my 7. The first time I drove Marla, it was instant love as soon as i let the clutch out, it was as if the car was screaming out to me "get me, you know no car will ever feel like this." There was only 1 other car that came close to the feeling I get in my Rex, the old 85 or 86 toyota corolla hatchback I learned too drive in.
Other cars....just seem so fat. It isn't me and the road, It's me and the controls.
I let my friends drive the seven, they also drove the talon. They all agreed the talon was faster but my seven won in the fun department every time.

I drive an RX-7 because it has character. It's a great feeling to tell someone I swapped in a 1.3 L engine and can't get it to run right. Everyone always asks me why I didn't choose something bigger, I just say "that's all I need". And the removable sunroof is freaking sweet.

my rx-7 feels more like an extension of my body than any other car i've ever driven.
it was inexpensive to purchase, it is relatively inexpensive to maintain due to abundance of replacement parts.
it looks sexy as hell even if it is a 20/20 car.
it has the excellent siren song of a strong rotary (it sounds like crap)

oh did i mention that the rx-7 community is the coolest bunch of car buffs ever. it seems like owning a rotary strips one of all ego. they are the great humbler.
this is good - everyone seems to leave their attitudes at the door when they get into an rx-7.
i've gotten sooo much help from rotary folks since i've owned my car, and i try to give back to the comminuty whenever i can.

Yeah, I definitely enjoy having a car i can easily work on (it seems like everything is modular on the 1st gen). Plus, i have like one of 5 that still run in a town of 225000 people, so its cool being part of an elite group. Plus, I'm interested in becomming an automotive engineer, and the 7 really seems like an engineer's car, with the rotary engine, and all.
