Not a good sign!!!!!!

I am looking into buying a 1985 GSL-SE
Checked the car out looks good but the front bumper
Did a compression test Front(120) Rear(120) excellent right. Almost convinced me but noticed that there was oil leaking where front housing and rotor housing meet on spark plug side. The thing is that someone put a whole bunch of JB Weld to stop the leak. Did a shitty job and just smeered all over.
Will this last and would I have to rebuild the engine?
If I do rebuild it how the **** am I going to remove the JB Weld?
Any advice would help
By the way he is asking for $1000

The infamous dowel pin o-ring leak. Do a search with the high-lighted words for a lot more info you don't want to see......two schools of thought here...
  • Remove flywheel and torque the 4 bolts at the "ear" where the dowel pin is until the tension bolt stretches. No one knows the actual torque figure, but I do know 56 ft-lbs won't do it. The danger here is that if you go too far, the bolt will snap, leading to the second school of thought...
  • Engine has to be rebuilt to replace the o-rings, which is the correct cure.

Wow. I'd still go for that car myself, though, if the price was right.

I need to do the engine overhaul anyway. I think my 12A '83 has the infamous leak, at least if the oil pan gasket doesn't stop it.

But I'm still in collector mode. And I'm a packrat by nature. And having something around with interior would be nice to patter the interior to fix my '83 with... Ah well.

Where is this again? :P

I believe Signal Hill is in California, home to Racing Beat, if memory serves...I don't have a catalog nearby to confirm it, though...

And God Bless the Pack-rats...they seek to store and recycle what others want to waste and throw away.

Well, actually I just store and collect... I don't know about the recycling bit. I *do* happen to have a completely cleaned and reworking cylander head for a '73 240z... which is curious, because I don't *have* a '73 240z... Well, it is missing a valve and its assembly (I nicked the stem by accident - whoops, and the keepers are... somewhere. I think).

Now, if I only had a job where I *had* positive income... :P The paltry extra I get is going into all the mainteniance that appearently wasn't done on my *Free* 1983 RX-7.

On a completely different note, I'm a lot happier having a semi-working RX-7 then having a slightly rusty 240z unibody... yep.

Signal Hill is where Mazdatrix is
I am actually a couple of blocks away.
I still dont think it is worth getting the car
besides I have an FD in my garage but I never owned a 1st gen SE. Well I guess I will just look for a 2ng Gen in good condition and go from there.
Maybe if he drops the price to $500 maybe.
Thanx for the info guys
I would love to collect all the rotaries I can.

Huh. Well, as it turns out, after getting a new starter for my RX-7... the recycler just got a minty-exterior 280zx...

I'm going to see if I can pull a miracle and materialze 800 bucks outta my rear.

Mmm, collecting.

Man, if the rest of the car is in good shape, and all it has is a dowl pin leak, I'd buy it for a $1000. Just go and buy a gasket/rubber seal kit and rebuild it.
