Not really now, in thier day they were decent. Nice thing is, modding can be less expensive in some aspects than pistons. You can get a nearly 50% hp increase with exhaust and aftermarket carb, try that with a boinger.
Ah Just made my first good bonehead post for the night, didn't see that you had an SE. The SE comes with 135 hp stock, a good exhaust set up can get you near 155 hp.

Quick is a relative term...
In 1984 and 85, the GSLSE's tore up the competition in speed. In stock form it's pretty slow compared to a modern Detroit V8 or turbo RX-7. My GSLSE, however, is as fast as I want any street driven car to be for my personal use, I wouldn't want it to have more power even if I could do it easily.
The easiest thing to do to it to make more power is FIRST do a full tuneup on it. Fresh spark plugs and wires may do more for you than a full RB exhaust on a car with worn out parts.
Next, all depends on if you like flat out power or handling more.
If you like handling, get some new springs and struts for the car. It's not ridiculously expensive, I got some Racing Beat springs and Tokico HP struts for the car for about $400 shipped to my door. If the car has some good rubber on it this will TRANSFORM the car into a completely new machine, and it will handle with the best of them.
If you prefer power, the GSLSE responds really well to intake and exhaust. Add a cold air intake (or just throw on a K&N cone filter if you are lazy), lose the stock cats and replace them with either a midpipe or high-flow cat and the car gains a HUGE amount of speed. Just keep in mind that removing the cats makes the car LOUD if you don't put a really quiet good muffler on it. If you want to go all out, you can get the Racing Beat exhaust kit, which has headers, presilencer, and muffler all together.
When I first got mine, I did intake and exhaust first, but I did have the issue that the car was producing nice power, but with the shot 20 year old suspension it couldn't put it to the ground, and I had to take it easy around corners. Much like driving an V8 boat. If I were to do it over again, I would do tuneup first, suspension second, intake/exhaust third.
After all that, then you can decide if the car is quick enough as-is, or if you want to do the little things to give it even more power.
Oh yeah, do you know what your FC your engine came from? The series 4 engines (86-88) had more power than the stock SE engine, but not quite as much torque, but overall isn't significant enough to matter. The series 5 engines (89-91) boosted the HP quite a bit. If you have a S5 engine in a GSLSE and do the supporting mods... that would be sweet.

I'd say it's definately worth 800 bucks if it's running. Everything seems to be in pretty good shape.
That's the standard GSL-SE engine in there, if I remember correctly stock it puts out around 135 HP. It's worth noting that the SE has more torque than any other NA RX-7, so it seems much more powerful than that. Intake and exhaust can bump that up to 160 or so assuming the engine is strong. Also, GSLSE engines are among the most reliable of rotaries, so it may have 160k on the clock and still run great.
By the way...replace that Fram oil filter with something, anything else. My SE had one on it when I got it, replaced with with a cheapo Purolator and the car noticed the difference immedately. Fram filters are restrictive crap.
