Exclamation noises noises and more noises

my 81 has been making all sorts of wierd clunking noises lately. some just straight up sound like metal hitting metal, some like a whinning noise, some like a clicking noise. A few people i have talked to have said maybe just the trailing arm bushings might be shot, some say it could be the diff and im hereing a noise that sounds like its comming from my trainy, kinda sounds like something knocking around in the tranny housing. Any thoughts or suggestions would be awsome . Also if i wanted to replaced my entire rear, could i use a entire rear axle off the later model gsl's i want to get the lsd and rear disc brakes. again any help or whatever would be very helpful.

Well, from what I've heard a bad tranny mount can make some noise. But I did have an old Maxima that ate a synchro and was shooting bearings around internally for a while before it finally jammed up. Sounded pretty interesting.

Whirring from the rear could be the diff or a rear wheel bearing. To check the bearings, look in the FSM for specifics. But basically you take off the rear wheels, remove the brake drums, and pull on the shaft to see how much play there is.

For a diff, check in the for sale section. Someone there in Indiana has a few he is selling off.

You say its making noises, can you feel them?

Keep hand on gear stick and see if you can feel it... Drive thru a tunnel and try and pick out where the noise is coming from... or get a friend to drive alongside and see if he can hear where its coming from.

Mine does the same, mainly from not having the additive in there but on really hot days (I assume from the fluid being overheated) you can hear the LSD from a stop and feel it in the tranny.

The R&P was inspected before put in my car and was used in a race car (evita on here) so there's nothing wrong with it...I haven't done any reverse drops since I grenaded the last one either! (LONNNGGG story).

Also, I just replaced my wheel bearings, however my tranny mount IS bad so I do have another one laying around just to lazy to get down there and take care of buisness...I have to replace the clutch system anyways so I'll just wait.

hey thanks for all the feedback. my noise is also a feel i can feel it in the stick, and in the gas pedal plus it seems to have made my car vibrate a lot more when im driving....as to where the noises are coming from some people have said front and some have said back...i hear noises coming from both areas

Also if anyone could help me out with info on what all needs to be done to swap the gsl-se rear into my 81, thatd be awsome if it is my rear that should get rid of the problems plus its something i wanted to do anyway, i want the lsd and dicsc brakes
Thanks

Jack your car up take the 4 bolts off where the driveline hooks to the rearend and pull the drive line out. I guarantee the u joints are going bad. the U joints are probably sticking and that is what is making the clanking noise.

I suggest you check ALL your mounts. Engine, tranny, suspension bushings, everything. Also, check your rear end for excess play and your wheel bearings as stated above. Check U joints as mentioned also. One of these things is the problem, you just have to find it.
