Run a CarFax on it.. get the VIN # 's and go to DMV and place a LIEN (lean) on the car. Go to your police HQ's and ask if a......colour......plate #.......rx7 has been reported stolen.. don't give up any money untill you know at least some facts first. Homeboy can't wait or presures you to buy,,,,,walk away, don't look back. somethings up..

you've got lots of options.

Check your local laws regarding car titles. You might be able to apply for an 'abandoned vehicle' title or something like that. Have you done a CarFax on the VIN to make sure its legit?

Does he drive the car on the street ? are the tags up to date ? even a car bought from a salvage yard will have a 'salvaged' title. do some homework and research the VIN and the current plate number(s). don't tell the guy your doing this either...or try. if he has a problem with you wanting to run a CarFax,,, somethings up .

go to DMV, give them the vin and they will have you mail a registerd letter to the LAST owner from their records, he will either give the ok to let you have a new title or better yet if he doesnt open the letter, it will come back as "could not find owner" {thats how i got mine}.....and a new title will be issued to you...

good find zac! what color is the car and what model. in ohio, one just need to apply for a "lost title" and if all your credentials check out and the car has no owner, you get the title!

NC? You will most likely not be able to do anything with out a good outlay of money. NC is very strict on titles, Also if it was in the salvage yard and they turned in the title, then there is no way to get it back.

Now GA does not requre title on cars 86 and older, but where I am 81+ needs emmisions testing. So what we do if it is a 79 or 80 is you sell it to me, I put insurance on it and get a tag and regestration, I sell it to you with BOS and you take the BOS and regestration to the DMV, They will accept that, and give you a new title. I was Told that this was OK by the DMV in NC when I was changing titles on a car I bought and kept up there.

Donna, where are you at? We had a meeting today at Cool Springs (15 miles south of downtown Nashville).

Oh well... sorry for the unrelated post.

Yes, NC is very strict. I went though the same thing about 6 months ago in Jacksonville. I can't remember exactly everything I had to do but the lady at the DMV explained everything that I needed. I do remember that I needed to get a bond for it..

I was trying to give my car to a friend of mine and my car was licensed in RI. In RI cars over 10 years old don't get titles. They would not let me transfer the car to his name because I did not have a title. They said I have to have atleast three registrations for it and I told her I've only had the car for about two years and its a two year registration so that would take 6 years. They weren't hearing it so I said F**k it and just had my friend have it tagged in his homestate which is GA.

Does the guy have a next of kin. I think in alot of states the next of kin has authority to sign for things in the event that the owner passes away. You're gonna have to ask the folks at the registration office.
