I think that with the thermo removed, that in never gets to the correct operating heat range, (from what I hear not such a good thing. I don't think there is a chance in hell it would oveheat though...

Thermostat actually slows down the coolant in the engine so it can absorb more heat.

Yes.

Buy one and put it in, your motor will never reach the correct operating temperature without one. Not good.

My old motor never had on either, but I didnt know, it is dead on the garage floor now and Iam sure the fact that it never reached correct running temp didnt help matters.

Regards Sue

i had a chart somewhere on it but i cant find it, but yea basically you need an engine to run in the right temperature, otherwise wear on the engine is a lot faster. Basically the wear multiplies like every ten degrees short you are of the desired temp..

once the thermostat opens fully, the coolant flow is the same as it would be without it. in it's closed position, the flow is almost non existant, alowing for quick warm up. as stated before, without it, it takes much longer to get to normal temp, which it will, especially during the winter months. i've never lost an engine from not running a thermostat.

ruby7, i think that once that engine is tore down to find out why it failed, i don't think it will be because it was run without a thermostat.

Thermostat only has a hole about, what, 3/4 if an inch? It restricts flow. On the race cars we have different size holes in round pieces of metal to change how much restriction. The thermostat is just another $3 part that can end your day if it fails. If everything else is functioning there is no reason to not run one on a street car, and plenty of reasons to run one.
