No start + weird shake during cranking

I went to go start up the 7 to go to the store after it had been sitting for ~ an hour or so and it wouldn't turn over. It sounds like the starter is spinning faster than usual and causes the whole car to shake with the revolutions of the engine. Tried to crank it several times and once it acted like it started to fire up for a very brief instant.
I was thinking maybe a fuel problem, but the shake while cranking worries me.
Any ideas?

Yeah, could be flooding. Try to get it to crank over enough to hit some throttle to clean it out if thats it. Also, try putting the pedal all the way to the floor when you start it, so that your carb gulps some air too.

Any mods? Like is the rats nest still intact?

If that doesnt work...

Pull the plugs and let it spin over about 20 times to spit the gas out.

Wire-wheel the contacts on the plugs and it will probably fire right up.

If not check the fuel pump by turning the key to run and listen for the "hummm" of the fuel pump

No humm- No gas...

Good luck.

I have yet to see a flooded engine shake, unless something is broken. Pull the plugs, do a compression test.

Update: it's an 85 engine w/ rats nest delete. Everytime I start the car cold, I pull the choke and mash the accelerator until it fires. I went out there about 2 hours later and it started fine and has been doing ok since....

Yes they are very cold-natured.

You shouldn't have to mash the accelerator to start it cold thought. The choke should do the trick.

But once the engine is the slightest bit warm, it should have to troubles firing..

So is it still shaking or did it quit.....?

I have, when its really flooded and you are cranking it over it might start but be firing really really slow in the RPMs, mine did this all the time until i took the flooding nikki out.

Kind of like chugging along really slow, i would eventually be able to get the RPMs up high enough to clear it out, though it would be very stubborn at times.

Its been doing fine ever since then. I've never had it flood or have major starting problems like that.

Inspect your motor mounts.

Sounds like maybe it was only partially flooded, with one or two "cylinders" firing. I've seen that a few times with my own car when flooded. You can get some really weird feedback from the motor under those conditions...

Glad to hear she's okay now...
