No Start - 2GCDFIS w/TT

Alright, so the car won't start. I have my aftermarket tach wired to the black wire on the 2nd gen coil, and last night the tach signal just totally dropped out, weird. The car drove just fine, so I didn't think much about it. Today, when I went to start the car, no luck. Not even the slightest hint of the engine starting. So, I hooked up my timing gun to make sure I was getting spark, I had nothing on both leading plugs, and nothing on both trailing sparks as I tried to crank the car. Now, I may be wrong, but the timing gun should still indicate the sparks firing while trying to start the car, right?

Also, the transistor trick, the green light stays on in accessory, and the red light does flash when trying to start the car.

So..what are the chances that both leading and trailing coils and/or ignitors burnt out overnight on their own? I'm at a total loss of confusion, I have no idea whats happened.

Strange. At first I would say the 2nd gen ignitor died, but that wouldn't explain the lack of spark on the trailing. The lights on the TT are flashing, so you are getting signal from the leading ignitor at least. Make sure that you have power to the coils. Also, try checking for spark with a plug wire near the strut towew. The timing light should flash, but this way should tell you if there is spark for sure or not.

We know that the leading ignitor is still working (J-109). You can switch back to stock leading and that should get you going. If you have an 84/85, you will have to bybass the fuel pump relay to get the fuel pump running if you lost the trailing ignition.

Good luck. Let me know if you need anything.

Hmm.. I'll definately check those things out tomorrow. I know the fuel pump is running, I can hear the Carter whizzing away in accessory. If it is the ignitor, I think I have a spare, the rest of my stuff is back at my other house though, including the stock ignition setup... I'll know more tomorrow in the daylight, thanks for the replys so far

Alright, so I don't know why the trailing wasn't firing- but I reverted back to the stock ignition, and have got the car running. It appears to me that the 2nd gen ignitor has burnt out, is there any way to test it?

Also, it feels like i lost so much power reverting back to stock
