NO Idle!!

I have an 85 1stgen with about 90K on it and I recently began having problems with the idle dropping and then rebounding. Now it just drops and I get a bunch of pritty red lights (not cool). The car runs, but it smells really rich to me. My mechanic changed plugs, cap rotor, fuel filter and air filter and checked for vacume leakes (couldn't find any).

Do I need to change all the hoses??

Also, does anyone know a RX7 EXPERT in the Baltimore Maryland area. My mechanic is really good and honest, but even he admits that he is not an expert on the RX7 and some of its more esoteric parts.

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!!

Bill

Is this an SE? I am thinking either coils/igniter? Did you verify you are getting spark? Pull the leading plug wires (lower) and have someone turn the car over to see if it is sparking. If getting spark then you ignitors and coils are probably working okay. I did have problems where the ignitors would fail at temp though, but cold they worked fine. You could always swap the ignitors (located on the distributor).

The next thing to check is fuel. If carb'd then spray some carb cleaner down it or pour some gas and see if it starts. Otherwise you could check the fuel pump for voltage.

NO Idle

It is the base S model. I don't think it is the plugs etc. or my mechanic would have found it and fixed it. He and I also think it could be in the carb. The fuel filter was full of crud from the gas tank. The car goes in for another stay at the mechanic's next week and I would like to have some ideas to suggest to him.
