Newbie Needs Help
Hey, ive owned my 84 GSL-SE for like 4 months now. This winter im going to be restoring the body and interrior. Well ive never really worked on a rotary engine. I can work on "normal" motors pretty good, know how to take apart, bore, clean, basically redo the, but seeing as a rotary is so different i wasnt sure if i should even try to rebuild it. If you think i cold handle it, please give me jsut a few like first things to do like wat order just to get the engine outta the car, once its out i should be able to manage. Also do any of you know of any rebuild kits cheaper than the ones that RAcing Beat sells? Thanks a ton
The only thing that is really different on the rotay engine is the engine its self. all the stuff connected to it is the same as the piston engines. If you can take a piston engine out you can get the rotary out.
they have some rebuild kits for the 12a on ebay for like 490.00 which i think is a good deal.
There is a video on rebuilding a rotary 13b engine which i think would be a good start and get the factory service manual/haynes manual for you car. You should be able to do it if you really study what your planning on doing.
I will be doing a rebuild and street port job on an 85 12a in the feb.
Good luck,
Sean

Get a Factory Shop Manual. People sell them used on ebay, keep lookin, youll find one. Theres a wealth of detailed info in there, not just on the engine. If you get it and can handle piston engine overhaul, then you should have no trouble with a rotary.
i have the video by bruce turrentine, i would definetly reccomend getting it first. it includes complete teardown, inspection and reasssembly, that's much easier explained than a haynes manual, as for a factory manual i've never seen one, i'm sure they are helpful, but i'd get the video first.
after determining what parts you need i would look at atkins rotary's e-bay store, they're cheapest i've come across, others should agree.

well this engine hasnt exactaly been kept in nice condition, it hasnt been cleaned or anyhtign in well probably 20 years and sat in a garage for 2 so i was gonna open her up and get new Apex seals and everyhting and also let everyhtign soak in my parts washer and clean it up real nice so that maybe it would run better. If you think i shouldnt do it just for taht reason then please tell me and i wont do it, i jsut thoguth that cleaning it would make it run much better.
