NEWBIE! Just picked up my old Gen 1

Hey Gang,

Just signed up with this forum and it looks like I will be spending way too much time here!

Just aquired a 1979 RX-7 with a 5-Speed and Street Port with less than 1k miles on it...

Funny thing is I owned this very car 17 years ago! In the Fall of 1988 I gave the car to a friend who was looking for "wheels" while at school. We both were on our way to Tallahassee to start our Sophmore year at College.

Over the years, he modified the car, eventually getting it to run high 11s with a bridgeport, NOS etc.. He parked the car in the late 90s shortly after installing a streetport engine.

Just the other day, he called and said, "If I don't come and get my old car, his wife is going to send it to the scrap yard!". I had it at my shop within the hour!

It's going to need a tuneup and lots of little things to get it back on the road and I plan to turn it into and autocross car.

Better get back to searching this board... I am way behind on my rotary knowledge!

Regards,

Sean

wow...that is cool. There are tons of people on this site that give up there 7 and then later down the road end up getting another one...sad thing is that it hardly ever is as good as their first one. Looks like you will not have a problem with that though!

Great to see you have a Lola T 340. Formula Ford was my passion some 30 years ago and I had some real competition with Lola cars in my Lotus 51.

Do you race frequently?

Cool

Yeah im new here as well.. but these forums are pretty much all we need. These people are so helpful despite the few certain individuals who can make a non-smoker crave a cigarette.. (yeah yeah.. you know who(s)) =)

Thanks to all for your kind words. Yes, it is a funny feeling to get your old car back after so many years. Paul, The Lotus 51 is a beautiful car. The Lola is in pieces and I am in the process of restoring it along with the Sabel sports racer. Not actively racing now but plan to start up in the near future.

Unique "cold air intake" system. At least it is a real cold air intake, unlike those pipes with a filter used on many "High Perfomance" imports.

I'll never sell it.

My buddy's 10 year old son was very sad to see the car towed away, so I shook his hand and promised him if he wants it for his 16th birthday it is his. After he's finished college I'll probably end up with the car again..
