Newbie Intro- quick question

Ok..I've always been intrigued by the rotarys and found an 85 with 135k miles on it for 500 bucks. It's an auto, and everything is good except it "needs a new carb". The guys says he has to let it run for 15 minutes before he drives it, it needs new brakes, some minor body damage, other than that it's gravy.

I haven't looked at it yet, but assume it's a decent deal. Drivable rotary for 500 bucks? I've looked @ the faq and plan to look for rust, milky oil.

Is the auto decent? I'm assuming it's the 12 motor not the 13, could be surprised though. Any thing else to look for?

I would think even if I needed cash from it I could recover 500 or more right?

I know this is a newbie type post, but if a few elders reply or send me in the right direction, I will soon delete this thread. Thanks in advance for the response,
John

Well, carb'd is almost surely the 12A...

But go for it otherwise. Good deal!

You stated it "needs a new carb", this would mean it is a 12a motor in all likelyhood. The 13b had fuel injection.
The auto trans cars are generally not driven as hard as the 5 speed cars. The 135K is nothing to be concerned about, as many others (including myself) have cars with 190-200K, and they still run great.

12a...i don't think SE's even came in auto...(or did they?) anyways...i agree with MidWest...offer $300 and feel him out...make sure you check for rust and rear end body damage and such...good luck

GSL-SEs did not come in auto. 135k is pretty good, considering the age of the car. Make sure to check for rust under the rear hatch carpet. If you can, a test drive would be best.

I Bought A 85 Auto Gs, I Payed Too Much But 500 Is Ok. I Mean 500 Bucks Aint That Much When It Comes To Something That Turns On. To Swap From Auto To Manual It Will Cost You3oo Plus 400 Labor 300 For Pedal, clutch Cylinder, lines Flywheel, Clutch, Pressure Plate, Driveshaft(diff Length),and I Payed 26.00 For My Tranny So If That Tells U Something... I Dont Know... If U Havent Owned An Rx7... Buy It, They Are The Coolest...lol

you can get it and convert it to 5 speed...that would be a nice hefty 1st project on that car, a few people on this forum did it and shared info about it...

for auto to manual swap you need pedal assembly, wiring harness (reverse lights, neutral safety switch),different length driveshaft, clutch master and lines and then obviously a complete tranny, o yeah a diff tranny mount too... i guess its a good project except you are paying and doing the most just to be even with the average standard tranny rx

rotaryshack.com has an automatic with a blowthrough system on it(turbo), the automatic gives the turbo a lot more time to spool, i just thought this was interesting...
