Newbie 1st gen question.. How rare are the 85 GSL-SE?

I'm just curious to know how many GSL-SE's were produced in 85.. I know they are the last 1st gen.

Well, whenever I look to buy a first gen, it seems as though I can find nothing BUT 85 GSL SE, even though I don't NEED an SE, so, I'd say common.

how rare are GSL-SE models?
as rare as a 3 legged dog winning an *** kicking contest!

they made the least amount of the se models and they are the most sought after.... so...yes a clean se is pretty rare!

Phil, did you get lost, or just slumin'? That question has been asked before, and the general knowledge is that no one knows. Mazda supposedly isn't telling how many were ever shipped to the US. I know that I own 1 of 4 in Hsv. I don't think that they are that rare, but very sought after among first gen owners. There was however a limited edition that is very rare. '83 I think. Only about 1500 or so of those made. The more the years pass though the rarer the SE will be.

Sorry Brian.. i guess I should click on the "search" button.. Like my title say, I'm a "newbie".

Thanks for that info.. I was just wondering as I'm now committed to buying this 1st gen.. Its in beautiful condition and I thought why not. Since I'm getting some money back from the good ole IRS.

i'd say they are more rare than the regular models, but not that bad. Iv'e seen a lot of the SEs for sale locallly and there are a few on ebay. It's not like tryingn to find a CYM 1993 RX7 or something.

I thought I had read here one time..that there were a little more than 5,000 SE models (84 and 85) imported here. I think the reason why they can still be found is people spending $16,000-$17,000 on these cars bought new...they were better maintained and cared for.

RX-7s

The SEs were pretty common I think, there we 5000 LEs produced, maybe thats where the number came from. Some other interesting numbers:

1970 100,000th Mazda Rotary vehicle produced.
1973 500,000th rotary engined car produced.
1978 Millionth Mazda Rotary Engine produced.
1990 Cumulative production of 1 million RX-7s was achieved.
1999 Jan. 1: 1,790,793 total Mazda Rotary Vehicles produced.

In 1973, Mazda sold 104,960 cars in the US, twice the previous year's total. More than 92 percent had rotary engines.

A total of 474,565 first generation RX-7 were produced (from X605 through P132) from 1978 through July 1985.

Almost 80 % or 377,878 were exported to the US. By 1990, a million RX-7s had been produced.

Sales of RX-7's in US by Calendar Year
1978: 19,299

They're rare but not that rare, at least not here. I always seem to find a GSL-SE for sale here about once every week or two.

No, screwloose I wasn't counting yours. That would make 5 and if you are buying another then that would be 6 in Huntsville. All in all Phil I love my SE and I don't think that I would get rid of her for anything.

looking at these numbers you can't tell which were SE's and which weren't...I brought up this question way back when and no one could accurately come up with the numbers of SE's sold during these 2 years...I only assume that they are harder to come by because there were only 2 years of these made compared to the 5 years the other model FB's were made...plus during 84-85 not everyone was getting the full option SE model anyways...

too bad because I'd love to know the numbers...even if it is useless

Gsl-se

You will not think that the info is useless when you are on a game show and the question comes up! :-)

I was wondering this just a couple weeks ago actually and did some searches, so I had some saved links, thus the numbers. I had spent a reasonable amount of time searching and found some really cool links, including one that listed all types of commercially produced rotary vehicles, air, water and road produced during different years.

No specific production numbers on the GSL-SE though.

I think since it seems interesting to enough people I'll fire off an e-mail to Mazda customer relations. I had to deal with them for info when I imported my SE from canada to the states. They were pretty prompt and helpful. Hate to end up on jeopardy and not know this.... :-P

The 83 SE was called Chateau Silver and had a blood red interior and pinstripe. It was basically a GS option wise, but had the sweetest wheels ever factory installed on a first gen imo.
