I am looking at buying a 79 or 80 RX-7 can you guys give me some pointers on what i need to look for? Also are there any problems that commonly appear on these cars... Thanks in advance Alex

There really aren't any specific weaknesses for the years you're looking at, but there are a couple of thinks to keep in mind.
1) The 79's came with a points ignition (a distributer from an 81 or up will drop right in tho -- 80's have electronic ignition, but it's of a bit differnt design than the 81 and on). Electronic ignition is, of course, much nicer.
2) The transmissions went to a remote shifter in 81, which to my mind have a nicer feel than the 79/80 trannys (and you can get short throw shifters for the 81 up tranny pretty easily).
3) This is just my opinion, but if these cars ever do become 'collectable', I bet the most sought after ones would be the 79's (particularly the early 79's) and the 84 and 85 GSL-SE's.
