New wheels = High Top Speed??
ok, i dont care about the tire size or the speed at this point. what i am going to question is you saying "last night I was cruising on the Interstate with a 2002 wrx and I kept up till 130". now i dont want to be a dick but, i really dont think you could have kept up with him. an article i have indicates....well you read it and compare the numbers to that of an 02 WRX.

Well to mazdaverx713b when I said i was cruising with him. We were both at 85 or so when we started. Obviously I couldn't keep up with him from 0-130, but the road that we were on allowed me to maintain the 130 we were at. So yes, the WRX is faster, but top speed we were limited to the same speed. If anything this was a fun race for me and yes i kept up with a WRX. Don't believe me if you want but I wouldn't have asked if it wasn't true.
do you have any other mods other than the muffler?? how far behind the wrx were you? i'm not calling you a liar, i'm just saying that if what you are saying is true, your car has to be pretty quick for being stock. i've seen and driven first gens such as my gsl-se to pretty high speeds for a stock first gen. here's an example of an indicated speed.
here's a pic thats a little more clear.....

its just that many pretty stock first gens dont have a very high top speed. people are going to question you when you state that you have gone 130mph in a mostly stock car thats all.

Check out Blakes Past Post.
He has the complete breakdown to include RPM and Gearing Ratio.
These specs will give you all you need to know and more.
I'd search for the Link. But to lazy.

As far as the 130 mph , Sorry but I don't care what your speedo stated the stock 12a will not reach 130MPH, I have tried with many on very long stretches.
I can see a modified FB doing 130. One with about 180 to 200 horsepower should be able to do it. If you have an extremely long downhill high way, I can see doing it as well, but the decline would have to be relatively steep and really really long.
I too am calling BS on this. The highest I could ever get my FB was just slightly under 120. I was on I70, started in Saint Louis and took it all the way to Indy. I couldn't get it past 120 no matter how long my foot was in the gas. This was with exhaust and all emissions removed, so I am definitely calling BS.

mazdaverx713b you should scan that article and post it for the rest of us
I would love to see more reviews of our car when it was new.
Come on, he said he was going slightly down hill... give him a break already.
I believe it.
Doesn't a larger circumference of the wheel/tire make for lower overall drive ratios? And wouldn't that help the car out as far as top speed? (even though it wouldn't show up on the speedo)
Maybe the WRX's giant hood scoop sucked all the air out of the area and reduced air resistance...

just some info. i have personally hit around 135-140 in a 84 S. it was stock except for a header and a very high flowing exhaust. i was coming down a hill and even kept the speed up while going up another hill. this was VERY long ago, but i remember clearly that i was doing over 130.
easy speed just playing
Hey, I have a stock 85 GS and I was playing with some guy in an S2000 on the highway and I very easily got to 125 and was not nearly out of power. Take care of your engine and it will take care of you.
Hell, I'm not even sure if my Se with the racing beat header, ported intake, pineapple racing sleeves will even hit 135MPH. I'm sure it will hit 125MPH. I just don't know how long of a stretch it will take to get there.
Time to find out. :-)

Your Se should hit 130 without difficulty.
My first SE that I owned about 10 yrs ago hit 130 on the Florida Turnpike when I was heading to Moroso. My buddy was in his SE as well and we were seeing just how fast we could get them to go. It had a header/exhaust/MSD/cone filter.

my newly aquired SA has a stock port 12a, dellorto 48, RE exhaust, RB flywheel and clutch assembly. the previous owner is my neighbor. he said he has teh car up to 140 and it was still pulling. he is a friend of mine and i have never heard him lie or strech the truth before. after i get my new SS brake lines ill put his statement to the test.

2nd. At that speed and the gear ratio the engine would be taching so far that the engine would feel like it was coming apart.
3rd. When I had my S model with a RB header system and 44 mikuni set up, same type of flywheel. I believe I buried the speedometer but the engine felt like it was coming apart. This was on a very long stretch of highway.
my bad doc, i forgot the speedo doesnt go to 140 in this car. i just remembered he had teh speedo topped out. so i guess he had it at 125(?). im not making the statement as my brothers friends uncles brothers aunt. its my neighbor, a good friend of mine. i just wasnt there when he did it. its just another person saying these cars will go that fast. as i have stated above, i have personally gone over 130 with a 12a with an exhaust. i was going done hill but i also kept the speed up while continueing up a hill.
im just saying its possible. people who say it is are being ignorant. there are so many factors to take into account for. maybe the guys who "cant" do it are too far above sea level? idk, just an idea.
