new toy

well, with 200 bucks in hand and a jumper pack, i picked up my new toy this weekend, an 82 gls rx7, running, gutted interior, etc etc. been garaged about 2 years on non-op since the original owner couldnt get it to pass smog (CA) started doing some checking and noticed its running rich as all hell, enough that the exhaust will water yer eyes if ya even get close to the back of the car. Pulled the cats and ya could see through em :/ so i decided to take a look at the carb, after removin about an inch of crud from the aircleaner and carb housing i started it again and looked down the throttle bore, thats when i noticed one of the primary venturi's spitting gas like mad and the other bone dry....

heres the stupid question, im a gearhead, tho ive never messed with a rotary before, would it be possible to rebuild the carb, or am i better off paying someone to do it? this whole "oil injection" setup concerns me and i dont particuraly wanna screw something up, the stock 12A has 164k miles and runs strong over 3k rpm < floods excesively at anything below that>

basicly im asking will i FUBAR it by trying to rebuild it or not ...

Get a FSM, there is a website that has them scanned, though I don't recall the url (its on five or six threads). As always, take photos as you take it apart, that way it will be the same when you put it back together. And remember: its not all that different from a normal motor until you get inside the rotor housings.

Haynes repair manual. I recently got one from ebay. Should have been the first thing I did when I got the car. Everything I had questions about was answered in the book. 4 full pages of pictures on rebuilding the carb.

I wish I had enough money to pay other people to fix my problems.

From the cost I've heard, Carl is not expensive. I had 2 carburetors for another car rebuilt for around $450, and those were stock, and came back stock. Granted, they came off the car at his shop, and back on, so I didn't have to get my hands dirty, but still...I think it's a fair price that they charge, considering what you get.
