New rx7 owner, yes.

Well jut picked up my first rx7. Got a 83 black 5 speed of course. I have to change the clutch soon, it chatters and I hate that. Also the stereo in it kind of sucks, well now anyway might have been good 20 years ago. The lights match perfectly with the interior glow but the display dont light up at night so. . . any suggestions needs ipod input double din would be nice but I dont know if it could fit in my car?! Not sure what model it is no power anything and no sunroof ( damn ). It does have Full headers and exhaust by mindtrain although it does have a small leak by one of the weld spots on the headers. Would this hurt performance or the car? I believe he said he had plenom ( sp? ) chamber which converts the stock carb into something a different number of barrels or something I am not sure. full suspension with koni adjustable struts and lowered 1 inch. new paint job. maintained very well with receipts for almost everything done. Was the owner since 87 and only selling because he just bought an SE. He also has a a viper alarm but whats really cool is the custom alarm he did. He put a rocker switch under the seat. When ou move the seat up past a certain point it hits a hill on the floor and flips the switch resulting in a fuel cutoff. SWEET. but he was taller then me so I have the seat moved into the furthest forward position it can be without hitting the switch and leaning against a small pillow. One question though, when I really step on it it stumbles for half a sec then takes off? Why? Also there is a high pitch whining noise when in the higher rpms, what is this? And to my knowledge there are no flames from the exhaust, WHY WHY NOT? Ha I love them, when I see others with that. I would think with full exhaust and not cat it would easily, although there is alot of poping and smoke haha. Never been behind the car though so I dont even know why I said that. I think because in videos I seen even like 2k rpm reves will backfire and mine dont even pop? Oh no. Hahaha. I will post pictures up soon.

Got paragraphs?

The exhaust leak shouldn't hurt performance as the 12a's don't need any backpressure. It could become annoying though.

If it it shutters on full throttle, its probably dumping too much fuel. Retune, or get your carb retuned, she sounds like shes running rich.

From what I have seen, flames seem to emerge on the overrun at around 6-7krpm. If there is popping, there might be flames. Do it at night, see then.

Congrats on the new 7. Sounds like you got a good one.
The stumbling when you stab the throttle, I would guess, Is just the secondaries opening. That can be tuned out to a point.
From the description of the rest of the car, the high pitched whine could be a turb or a supercharger (that'd be sweet), although doubtful, as those parts are hard to conceal. I think we need a little more description on that one.
Post up some pics of the car, engine, etc....

Sounds like you got an base "S" model which is the lightest of all the trim models. Yeah the leak won't hurt anything but as said may get annoying. It sounds to me like the carb is set up on mechanical secondaries so when you stab the throttle it's instantly opening the secondaries which is dumping a bunch of fuel at once. Does it do the same if you just ease into full throttle? Condradulations and welcome. Mindtrain exhausts are hard to find and praised by many so kudos. POST PICTURES

your paragraph was hard to read. :P, haha, but anyways as far as the stereo, if you want a cheap alternative at like 50 bucks tops, go to walmart and buy one of their durabrand cheap stereos, i've had this for 3 years now, works great, easy to manage, and has the same exact orange glow as the 1st gen interior . but its basic so no ipod slot.

your carb stumble at wot sounds normal, and he probably did mechanical secondaries which would make the stumble more normal. we'll need pics to verify this, but basically what mechanical secondaries do is it takes the vacuum control off the bigger barrels on your carb, and makes it so that you decide when you want to downput all that power....

the whining noise could be anything from a radio interference, maybe vacuum leak idk several possibilities so help us help you by letting us know where the noise is coming from

Hey thanks for the replies. Yea I will try to take some pictures today, its pretty sunny out. If you are wondering I do live in hawaii thats why in december its still sunny and hot.
The whining noise does come on even when easing into WOT. It sure sounds like it is coming from the engine bay. Doesn't seem bad but who knows. I will take a video and maybe you will be able to hear it then. could be the lightweight flywheel, because I had one in my other car and it whined bu sounded more like a buzz saw. This sound is more higher pitched.

Forgot to add but it also has a lightweight flywheel and stage 2 street clutch both by center force. The springs are by TMC.

I have one question though, what is a plenum chamber? What does this do? He said with lightweight flywheel, full exhaust, and a plenum chamber it really makes a difference in power and he prefers the power of this rx7 over his new SE with racing beat headers.

As for the stereo I was kind of looking into a double din. I do not know if it can even fit in the car tough because the layout is from top to bottom: ac controls, radio, ash tray/ cig. lighter, storage space, nothing. will try to post some pics up tonight to help out with the description.
Any suggestion on speakers as well? The fronts are 4inches and the backs are 6 1/2 right? Can they be altered to bigger or is this the size most of you are running?

Thanks for the welcome and for all the help your willing to give.

definitely on the pics ...no idea what a plenum chamber is

there's a couple of threads on the double din stereo, just use double din as the keyword and i'm sure they'll come up. you're correct on the speaker sizes, i have some cheap sony xplodes on the rear (6.5) and some kickers up front (4in). that's more than enough, if i had money i'd get the kicker 6.5 just because of the difference in sound quality but i have no complaints, i did used to have a sub right behind the seats and it kicked pretty good (12" MTX powered by 1000W amp) i was pleased but took it out because of weight issues....personal preference.

so to summarize all that, stock size speakers work fine, just get some good quality ones and you'll be pleased. also if you want optimum sound quality you can sound proof the car or w/e that's called and install some of that sound matt thing...i don't think it's needed but it depends on how deep your pockets go.

Plenum=Intake. Nothing more nothing less. Do you have a cogged drive belt? That could explain the whine under the hood. If not it's probably a vacumn leak.
