Hi all

I got a 81 rx7 from my neaboure today for Aus$300. I am a datsun 240z man but I couldn't resist the rx7 for that price. It has minimal rust and what I have been told a dead engine. The car had been sitting in his shed for about 6yrs.
I have read a bit of info on this great forum you guys are running and tryed poring a bit of hydrolic fluid int o the carby (after checking the water oil etc.) and what do you know the old girl fired up. With thick white smoke pouring out the exhust I sat in the drivers seat with a grin. The engine sounded what I thought a rotary might but being a zed man I dont really know how it should.

Later I thought I might restart it again and try and listen for the different sounds to figure out which seals could e knackered. when I went to restart the starter motor made a strange sound. I thought it may be just sticking a bit5 so I put the car in gear (manual) and rocked it abit to turn everything over a bit. Then when I tryed the stater same noise. So I checked the battery to see if the power was low but it was ok then I checked around to see if anything was different to when I tryed it earlier but couldnt see anything that stood out. Anyway to cut a long story short. The next time i tryed it the starter made a noise and then nothing. Now when I turn the key there is no noise????

I dont know what I did but it was getting to dark and the spot for the car in the shed isnt cleaned out so rather than fumble around in thedark I thought it bettter to take a lok i the light tommorow.
I am thinking of doing the old hotwire trick on the starter to make sure It hasnt died. I jst thought there may be a trick or obvious thing that might have gone wrong and not know rx7s Imight be missing it.

Any help would be great thanks

newly converted RX7 fan

Try the Fusable Links " A box with three little wires" left hand side of the engine bay.

I believe the Middle one is main. Wiggle it a bit around or check if it's fried.

Also check the fuse box inside the car by the hood release. One of those is main.

BTW: Welcome to the problems " I mean Club"

Try giving the starter a few raps and taps with a wrench (seriously). Sometimes she needs 'persuasion' to loosen up.

Obviously check the connections/fuses/links. If still no go, I'd do what your going to do- hotwire and see if she spins, then go backwards from there.

Welcome to the club! (By the way- You have great taste in cars 'mate!

I found a wire had just fallen of the starter. I fired it up last night again with the auto fluid in the carb and it ran ok with no starange sounds.
