Arrow New to RX-7s: Rebuilding a Rotary? Streetporting???

Hello all, I have been wanting to purchase an RX-7 for a looooong time and finally found a cheap one! ($600 CA) http://www.trader.ca/Search/Details....ategory=&CAT=1

Problem is that the engine is NOT in the car.

So what i am trying to get it is: Is it more difficult to rebuild a rotary then a piston based engine?

I would be buying a rebuild kit for sure (from Racing Beat or Victoria British)

Also, what is "streetporting" and "bridgeporting"?

Thanks for your help
Gaz

Here's something to get you started: Porting thread in Gen I Archives. If you still want more after that, then just run a seach for here and the Rotary Performance or General Tech forums. If that still leaves you dry, then ask whatever specific questions you have then.

You'll be getting several responses telling you to search for your answers, because they have been given here before. I hate those responses, so before they start, I'll try to answer your questions. I'm working on my first rotary rebuild, and in my opinion it's easier than a piston engine...fewer things to be concerned about. I'd recommend getting a rebuild video. Mine is from RotaryAviation.com. There is also one from AtkinsRotary.com that I'm told is quite good as well.

Streetporting and bridgeporting refers to the process of enlarging the intake ports in the side housings in order to increase air and fuel flow, thereby increasing horsepower.

Hope this helps,

get a factory manual, has all the measurements and specs for parts wear and such. i've managed to assemble a 12a on my living room floor, but i would suggest an engine stand, it'd make things together quicker.

GazXL, im doing my first rebuild and port right now. I want to half-bridge my 12a engine. Keep in touch with me if you have some questions that i may be able to answer. I, like you, am pretty new to the rotary scene, except that i know pretty much all the basics.

you know, that i'm not sure of. haynes manuals are avaliable at wal-mart, last time i checked. there are some things that you have to be careful about that can't be discovered from just taking the engine apart. where in canada are you located? i'm 30 mins from the border in potsdam, ny. if you want, pm me and i can start scanning in the pages pertaning to the engine removal/rebuilding from my manual, it'll take me a while tho.

buy a factory manual?
download it. there's a link in the FAQ sticky

haynes is good for rebuilds if you must have something in front of you, though.
