Anytime you rebuild a motor you need to do the following. Have the radiator checked out or cleaned. Have the oil cooler flushed or sonic cleaned.

i wouldnt say "need", but it probably wouldnt be a bad idea.
i reuse old oil coolers all the time and have never had any problems.

Well I'm glad that you have had no problems. Need is the correct terminology. If he bought from a place like Atkins or other quality rebuilder and you do not provide proof of having those 2 issues addressed then they can void the warranty. Why? Because putting any foreign material such as a oil cooler can have in it can shorthen or ruin a new rebuild. Also a marginal or inadequate radiator will not cool properly and may shorten or destroy that motor.

To take any chances on not doing something as inexpensive as those 2 things when you have spent all that money on your motor and invested all that time is not logical.

My advice is also to replace the water pump/hoses and thermostat at the same time. Unless of course those have just been done. PREVENTIVE maintenance is CHEAP insurance.

Haven't actually gone and checked, but a place that works on automatic transmissions might be able to help you, I'd imagine they clean auto trans coolers all the time, and they are very similar in design to our oil coolers. when I was swapping engines I flushed my oil cooler out with some auto trans flush stuff I bought at NAPA, lots of lovely crap came out, glad I did it.

You can also clean them out quite well with 4-6 cans of brake cleaner. Be sure to remove the thermo valve, then reinstall the plug before doing this.
