Negative Car Battery Ground
Just picked up an 83 GSL as a covid project. Definitely, the last owner did a bad job on some battery terminal replacement and the cables are also definitely shot. Picked up new cables but unsure of how to ground the negative cable. It goes from the battery terminal right to the engine but on the previous cable a small section was stripped and that was used to ground it to the frame near the strut with a small clamp "ground bracket". My new cable doesn't have this strip section (it's just a continual wrap). I tried to take the "ground bracket" off of the old cable to no avail. Is there a "proper" way to reground the cable (I assume you just can't rely on the engine ground). I was maybe thinking of adding a ground strap but it seems like there should be a way to reground a new cable but unsure of how to do that safely. Did a lot of searching but maybe I am using the wrong terminology.

Good luck with your project. The best way is to use two ground cables. One from the battery to the strut tower and another from the strut tower to the starter. This gives you a clean body ground as well as engine ground.
Check my signature for the service manual source.

A lot of us also like to run a stout cable ground from Battery (-) to the Alternator bracket. This gives you a very clean ground for the charging circuit, and may also improve ignition spark power to a minor degree. You can never have too many grounds on an engine, in other words.
