Need Troubleshooting help.....

First, Hello - I am a new member to this forum.
I have an 85 GS with the 12A engine. I am the original owner. the car is 100% stock with only 50,000 miles on it.
I recently rebuilt the carb and replaced the fuel pump. The only setting that I tampered with was the float level, which I had to set after replacing the needles and seats.
The car now idles ok, and accelerates fine. The problem is that during steady state running or low RPM acceleration, the car feels like it is missing or "stuttering" Based on the exhaust, it appears that it is running rich.
I have checked the timing, replaced the plugs and wires, fuel filter and air cleaner, and checked the Float levels. Nothing has made a difference.
Any help would be appreciated.

When you rebuilt the carb, is there any chance that you switched one of the primary jets for a secondary jet? Also, did you replace the fuel pump with a stock unit, or an aftermarket one? If it is an aftermarket pump, then you may require a fuel pressure regulator because most of them will overpower the carb otherwise. The Nikki Carb requires about 2.5 psi. Welcome to the forum!

I think Kentetsu hit it right on the head. This sounds almost exactly the way my '79 acted after I rebuilt the carb. I didn't have the low RPM acceleration problem, but it ran as if it had a big miss when I was just trying to cruise, and it was obviously running rich based on the color of the plugs (and the fuel mileage). I found out that I had reversed the jets in one of the float bowls, so the primary jet was where the secondary should have been and vice versa. It's been running great ever since I switched them around.

I'm pretty sure that it was your posting of that issue that I was recalling when I responded to this guy's issue. Gotta love this forum...

Yes, this place is invaluable. Sometimes it can be difficult to find the truly meaningful threads, but once you do it's a gold mine.
