ditto to that. check your basics first. spark there? gas getting through? for a quick check, take off the top of the air cleaner assembly and have someone pour gas into the carb while you crank. if it fires up you have a fuel delivery problem. also does the engine even turn over?

The engine will turn but it just wont start. i even bought a new battery. How do i check for spark??? Do i put gas through any of the 4 barrels in the carb?

for spark, if u have a spare plug laying around just pull off one of the wires at the plug end and insert the spare, lay it next to something metal and watch for a spark, and you can pour about a quarter cup of gas just down the carb on the drivers side,,,has your car been sitting up and how long, u can pull the fuel line at the carb,(the one closest to the windshield ) and crank the engine to see if gas is pumping out,,,,,good luck

ok peeps,
i have bought a new battery (i think it is 800 cranking amps) and i even checked the spark plugs. Well, plugs look good but i did not see a spark when i was turning the key. i know the spark plug wires are good. The distributor cap looks fairly new too. the engine just keeps turning slowly but will not engage. I bought a Hayes manuel book & it reads that it might be the fuel pump. When i turn my key, i can not hear the fuel pump sound that it makes like on my chevy truck. I almost got it going once, when i poured gas in the carb but it stayed on for 2 secs. Well, i ve been working on it for 2 days and now my battery is dead.
PLEASE HELP ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The fuel pump (if it's a stock one) will make a tick-tick-tick sound when it's on. Aftermarket fuel pump goes hmmmmmmmmmmm You should hear the pump when the ignition switch is in the ON position. You can easily check for fuel by taking fuel line off carb and put it in a plastic cup. Put out cigarette. Grab fire extinguisher. Turn ignition switch to ON position.
If theres no spark then that needs to be fixed too. Check wiring on coils. No shorts or rust on terminals. Check spark at coil: Crank motor with one end of coil wire on coil, other end of coil wire against a strut tower stud (or anything metal). Should spark when cranking motor.
Buy a battery charger and charge that puppy up. Can a friend jump the battery whilst cranking motor?

I'm pretty sure the 84-85's only run the fuel pump when the engine is being cranked, *NOT* when the key is in the 'on' position.
The earlier cars do work that way, however.

I wired my fuel pump to the gang switch with a inline fuse so the pump is on whenever its in the run-position on my '85 12a.
I also wired in a switch for the pump so I could make it more confusing for a thief to get it running and steal it. However, no one in the neighborhood including myself would not hear it running at 2am. By the time a thief realizes theres something wrong when the car starts to stall out which takes about 15seconds for the float bowl to run out of fuel that was in there, it would be 20yards down the street and the thief would be trying to get it started again and all confused while I would be walking out by the car with a baseball bat and notify the thief of a police call had been made. I'd keep my distance though because its unknown if a thief would have a gun or not.........
