Need suggestions for cowling area
My car finally came back from the paint shop ( http://picasaweb.google.com/rdfrahm/Stormy20081110# ) and it's truly beautiful. They didn't paint the cowling area, under where the wiper mechanism mounts, so I figured I 'd shoot it with some black. But I'm looking for ideas on how to put sound deadening material in there. I removed the stuff that the factory put in (same stuff they put on the floorboards). In the interior I'm going to put down some Dynamat, but didn't know if I could put that in the cowling because it doesn't look like it could be painted. Anyone have any experience with this? Or other ideas what I can do there?
Thanks,
Rich

i use a nice undercoating made by 3M that might help you. i spray inside and out of my restoration projects with it and while its not as good as dynomat, it really does cut out some of the road noise. dries in less than 24 hours and has a nice soft finish. brake cleaner will melt it easialy though.

I'll second that, I put down a good thick coating of that 3m undercoating (walmart sells it) in teh cowl area after removing the stock sound deadeing plastic/tar (whatever it is) and it looks nice and clean and doesn't seem overly loud, with the engine running I really don't hear the wiper motor very much.

around huntsville ala, there use to be lots of wings. Seldom see them now. Now it is spinner rims.
LEDs..... I should of thought of that. But I'm not a ricer guy, I'm a just keep it running kind of guy with a tasteful pimped out inside.
I hate spinners, loud expensive sub woofers, backed up exhaust, bald tires, and running on 5 out of 8 or 3 out of 4 cylinders.

I would use the 3M stuff. They have a type of undercoating that is made for reducing sound. It leaves a nice matte/satin black finish.
I know that Scott likes to use truckbed liner for his undercoating..don't know if that would help all all with the sound if you went that route (but is very durable).
I think the Dynamat could probably withstand the water okay (basically rubber), but I don't think that paint would stick to it very well. Maybe you could take a scrap piece of Dynamat and shoot with the 3M undercoating..see how it sticks. If it sticks okay, then maybe Dynamat with the 3M stuff over it would be the best option.

I didn't paint over top of it, it is black and once the cowl is on you really don't see it. However it wouldn't hurt to throw some paint over top for more protection. Persronally I like to keep that area black so its hidden, I didn't like it painted to match the car when it was stock...
The other thing I want to throw out there is that while dynamat would definatly keep the noise down its going to create arears for dirt/water etc to get stuck and potentially rust someday, like along the edges of the mat or in a crease that didn't quite stick down all the way etc... If the car is going to be garaged I guess its not such an issue, but I always keep the "rust factor" in the back of my head lol

Thanks for the advice guys. I just bought the 3M stuff at Wal-Mart. I wonder how Dynamat would stick to it? Could get some extra protection and sound deadening by spraying it on the floorboards and tunnel before putting down the dynamat.

Thats the good stuff As for the dynamat do you have your heart set on putting sound deadening back in your car? I've stripped it from both my FB's and it really doesn't make that huge of a difference as far as noise is concerned. Saves about 40lbs too... Just something to think about. Very nice job so far, can't wait to see it all together!
