Need starter help
Need starter help
So ive got a no crank no start issue and im pretty sure its the starter, can somebody help me find a good start for the 1980 sa rx7 please ? help would be grateful
If the engine is rotating when you are attempting to start it, the starter can be ruled out as a suspect. All the starter's job is, is to rotate the engine to start it. It does not aid in starting the engine in any other way.
An engine needs, compression, intake air, fuel, and spark to run. If you're engine is not starting, you are lacking one or more of these. When is the last time the engine has been started? Has the car sat for a period of time? I think we need to start by asking a few basic questions before we can delve into any diagnostic assistance.

so it’s been sitting for a good 2 months while i’ve trying to diagnose it and in the process one thing led to another and i started doing other work on it but just recently it stopped cranking, my friend who works on cars for a living said it’s the starter so that’s what i’m basing it off,
It can also be the starter trigger wire or the solenoid. Check for 12vdc on the trigger wire while cranking. If it's good, take the starter off and bench test it. Sometimes the solenoid can get stuck from just sitting.
As stated above, ensure you have a good battery. You must have good and reliable source voltage to diagnose electrical faults.
My next question is, does the engine rotate with the help of a ratchet? When the key is turned to the start position, do you hear any clicking or one singular loud thunk sound?
Once you have a good battery and if no noises are heard when the key is in the start position and the issue persists, check for 12V constant power to the starter solenoid. If you have source voltage there, have someone turn the key to the start position and ensure the trigger wire is receiving source voltage. The trigger wire is the single flat pin connector on the starter solenoid. You will of course want to check the harness side for source voltage and be sure not to jam the end of the probe into the front of the connector. Front probing can be dangerous. Just lightly touch the tip of the positive lead to the pin.
If you have proper voltage at both connections, you will want to look over the ground connections and ensure they are clean and tight. At this point I would suspect a faulty starter. You can remove the starter and bench test it or take it to a local auto parts store and have them test it. Either way, if you find it to be faulty, replace it and let us know how it goes.
