!!Need some help ASAP (FUEL FILTER)!!

Hey guys, I just installed a new fuel filter on my 85 GSL-SE as part of spring tune-up, first thing I've done. Got it on, started the car, no leaks, works great. About 5 min later I downshift going into a corner and the engine stops.Okay. After multiple tries, she wont' start. Seems as though it won't get any fuel??? Towed it home and made sure everything was connected properly, trieds again, no dice!! Any ideas? My buddy said that the fuel meter dropped too, but I didn't see it.

ANy ideas on where to start would be super dandy!! Please Help I need the car up and running!.

heres the link https://www.rx7club.com/1st-generation-specific-1979-1985-18/help-my-car-wont-run-i-cant-hear-fuel-pump-634014/
with my car at the end of checking everything it was the fuel pump. but read the thread first, it might not be the fuel pump on yours. they listed many ways to trouble shoot the issue. let me know if you need any other help

I'll ask 3 stupid questions.

1. Are you sure it's the right fuel filter, and it's not on backwards?

2. If the "fuel meter" dropped suddenly, are you sure the fuel level sensor is accurate? (Meaning, are you sure you're not out of gas?)

3. Is it possible you knocked something loose on the fuel pump (like a wire) when you were changing the filter?

Three answers:

1. Yes, it is right, I double checked its make and the way it was on.

2. Everyone said that, but no. The fuel level sensor has always been accurate and showed 1/2 tank at start of day

3. I didn't check the fuel pump yet, but will soon, as it occurred to me soon afer that it may be the problem.

Okay!!
I went out two seconds ago to see if she would go and she did, but jumped from 2-400 rpm and chugged a SH!^load of greyhish poo smoke out!! what the heck! would it even go again if the filter was on wrong or the pump was dead???

I'm not sure about the SE's fuel injection setup because I've got a 12A with a Weber, but once I ran out of gas in an EFI vehicle and it had to be towed. Just putting gas in the tank didn't help. I think it has something to do with EFI systems having a lot more pressure. So when you remove the filter you are opening up a closed system and relieving it of that high pressure. I'd suspect it needed to be primed in some manner, and with your multiple attempts to start it I think you did just that, eventually evacuating the air that you introduced into the systyem.

sock in the fuel tank being clogged can cause this problem. you may want to remove the feed line andcrank the engine to see if you are in fact getting any fuel at all.

I will try that today. The line into the fuel filter? or the line into the pump?no, it would be coming out of the pump, toward the filter, right?
