need some help

I have an 85 rx7 I got for 40 bucks thats been sitting for three years. finally got it started and running but it has little power and it starts jerking and wants to go dead at like 30. I'm gonna try to get the bad gas out, change the plugs, fuel filter.... any one had the same problem? also how are the 12a motors on gas mileage?

^ he does say 12a therefore carbed ... ya i would check fuel filter and get some fresh gas ... also if that doesn't work too good ... i would also do a carb rebuilt knowing that things could of dried up in the carb ....

Yeah, probably looking at a carb rebuild. But do all of the typical tuneup stuff first, and maybe you'll get lucky. Expect gas mileage around 18 - 20 mpg. Welcome to the forum.

as far as gas milage goes. I"m getting 18 right now and that is stock on a 83 12A. Windows rolled down ... and plaing around in it some. I'm going to try to be conservitive for this next tank and see how it does. Will get back with you on it.

85 should have a drain plug on fuel tank, on the driver side. After draining the tank, put about 5 gal of fresh fuel and about 1/2 can of b12 or seafoam in it, along with a new filter.
This should help to clean any gunk outta the fuel lines and carb.
Fuel mileage, well I get about 20 in town, and 25 on the hiway, with an 83.

Yeah I would definitly say that it is a fuel problem. I would aslo check the ignition system. these little motors can run with the timimg way way off. Check for spark in all the plugs.
A carb rebuild is easier than it looks, or you could spend some money and get a good used aftermarket setup.

my cat is clogged. I got under her the other night and everything was glowing. thanks for all the comments she runs better after simple tune up but still has no power and tops out at 60. if taking the cat off doesnt help I'll check timing then the carb. the carb seems to be in excellent condition though. thanks again

ya do the carb at the very last thing ... i would even change the line or clean them (changing them yourself is pretty easy and might be as cheap as buying the chemical to clean them)

If your leading ignition is not firing, you will overheat the exhaust system due to the late combustion pushing still flaming fuel out through the exhaust ports. So your glowing cat could be a symptom of either a clogged cat, or an ignition issue. Just pull one of the lower plugs and see if it sparks.
