Question Need some advice

I've lately decided that there are 2 things I can do with my Mikuni carburetor. The first thing would be to have it rebuilt so that I can get the damn idle screw tip out, then order a bunch of jets and take it to AIM and have them tune it.

The other thing I can do is buy a new carb kit. I'm looking at 2 kits, the Racing Beat Holley 465 kit ($770) and the RotaryShack Weber 45 DCOE ($675). The Mikuni is giving me a lot of trouble but I know it's still useable if I dump a some money into it, though I imagine both the Holley and the Weber would give me more power.

So, considering drivability (3-season daily driver), power (going onto a stockport 12a with full RB exhaust), and expense (I'm a very poor student) what do you guys think I should do?

Repair the Mikuni.

Costs the least and is a good carb for a stock port 12a

First, get the idle screw out and see if the seat is still good. Then get ahold of Wolf Creek Racing for the parts. If you don't want to go that route, PM me. I may be able to fix it you. I have a couple in the shop and a rebuild kit.

Hmm. So there wouldn't be much of a performance gain with one of the other carburetors? Rebuilding the Mikuni sounded like the least expensive way to go, but I figured I'd pick up enough HP with another carb to make the price worth it.

Drozen, do you mean a huge power gain after putting the Weber on a stock RX-7 or after swapping a Mikuni for the Weber? I want to know some relatively objective opinions on what benefits the various carbs have. Somebody around here has to have owned both a Mikuni and a Weber/Holley...

As for selling my carb, that's not going to happen for a while yet. It's probably going to still be on my car until at least the end of the summer when I swap the engine from my GS to my GSL. If I decide to sell it and get a different carb and sell my Mikuni I'll let you guys know.

Properly sized and tuned, there will be little difference in overall hp output between the various aftermarket carbs. Repairing the Mikuni is your cheapest option. It can be done for much less than replacing the carb, and if needed, the intake.

Yeah, any of the aftermarket carbs will make a big difference.

I'll just go with a rebuild then. I'm still not sure how I'm going to get the broken idle screw tip out though. I suppose I'll just take it to a reputable carb shop and let them deal with it, then off to AIM for some tuning on the dyno.

I agree with trochoid. A stock 12A US specs will give you 100hp. Just adding a performance carb will only give some 10hp gain, you need a decent header and exhaust system to get the best from the carbs with maximum of around 155hp regardless of what the carb is, Sterling modified Nikki, Weber etc. The Mikuni is a good carb so repair will be your best option.
