You could probably just take it to any normal mechanic, it sounds like something to do with the carb, and not the engine itself. I believe, everything is pretty much the same on a rotary, besides the engine itself. I don't think the carbs operate any differently. I'd suggest grabbing a phone book and making a few calls to mechanics in your area, and just ask them if they work on rotary engines. And i'm sure you could ask if they know of one, and i'm sure they could tell you. I did see a thread around here somewhere that was a big list of mechanics and vendors, used it to find Rotary Resource here in Tulsa, but I don't remember where I found that.

Boston area is a little broad.Where are you exactly?I am just off cape on the south shore, and could possibly have a look at it,but it will have to wait a few weeks until I get the 87I am working on with a friend, and my newly purchased 79 out of the way first.Give me a private message, and we can talk.

Hey guys,

A little update on Rich's troubled 80 RX-7 in case anyone cares. The car just left my garage on super bowl sunday after a week of pouring over the car.We fixed it to about 95% perfect, and it is 100 times better than it was when it arrived at my house.

What we found was either years of neglect, shotty work in the past,or just flat out broken parts in the car.The biggest issue that we found was the distributor cap was on the distributor cocked due to the metal plate above the trigger wheel in the distributor, and therefore the rotor snapped off the center pin of the cap.I was amazed the car was even running let alone it rev to 3-4000 RPM's.Also we found a very neglected carb that had the secondaries disconnected, and the accelerator pump full of debris. It seems as though the carb had been opened before which was evident by the ease of screw removal, and a check ball, and weight that were installed inverted. We even inflated his tires, bled his brake system, and adjusted the pedal height.

All in all we think the ignition trouble was his biggest problem, and the carb wasn't helping.Couple all of that with an exhaust that was in pretty poor shape to begin with, and you have a recipe for a poor running car.I am glad I have nice neighbors who don't mind shot-gun blast back-fires from a 26 year old car at 10pm on a thursday night.Hey Rich if you are reading this you need to tell your wife or who ever is driving the car to rev the snot out of it every now and again. It is good for em' trust me on this.Oh yeah by the way I think that car has 136K miles on it not 36K.It looks pretty clean on the underside, but the interior, and body is too rough for that low of mileage.
