Exclamation **urgent**engine disassembly

Are there any key points I should make before taking the engine apart? I don't want to take everything apart and then when I am putting everything together loose something like correct timing position.. this is what I have done so far..

1 oil filter and assembly
2 altanator
3 emissions solenoids
4 barcket for powersteering? or is it airconditioning..? anyway..
5 intak system
6 engine mount

the haynes book tells me to take the distributor out next.. should I make marks someware to not loose its position?

Don't worry about the dizzy, when you assemble, then you clock the e-shaft and set the dizzy. Read through the entire disassembly/assembly process a couple of times. That will help you understand the entire process and give you a better understanding of how each component works with the others.

This is my first rebuild.

I want to disassemble the engine.. see if the apex seals can be saved.. and out everything back together.

I want to remove as much of the carbon as I can, what type of solvent is best and strongest for cutting the carbon. Would something like paint thinner take the stuff right off?

In piston engines I've used phosphor/bronze brushes and carb/gun cleaner... I have *NOT* attempted a rotary rebuild though!
