Unhappy Need new rear end?

Just found out what the noise was in the rear..knowledgeable rotary mechanic says needs new rear end. Ok, those of you that have bought them from junkyards, etc, what kind of $$ am I looking at? The guy says he thinks he has one on a junk automatic, but hasn't given me a price yet. Like to get a paint job too, but got to get it running right first.
Thanks for the opinions. BTW, 85 with 139K.

I bought my 84 GSL limited slip diff axle and disc brake assembly for $150 from a local junk yard.

Maybe your gear oil is old/bad. I'd try switching to a high quality synthetic gear oil first. Maybe that'll be enough to quiet it down. I just installed Redline 75W90 into my diff and the chattering I was getting went away. YMMV A lotta guys like to use Royal Purple too. Both are good products.

Hope this helps. Good luck!
