Need info on a GSL-SE fuel pump **
Ok guys here is what I got. GSL-SE '85 CSP class- 115k on the odometer. Fresh fuel filter about 5 events ago.
AutoX today, ran 1st run the car ran fine, let it idle for a bit while it cooled down and then shut it off. 10 minutes later, no go. Had spark on both L & T, so I pop the right side storage box unhooked the fuel pump connector (still on grid) grab the test light. Turn the engine over and I had 12v to the pump.
Safe guess is that the pump is not pumping, since there was no noise coming from it while cranking the engine.
SO, do I go back with the factory fuel pump from Mazda Motorsports, or is there a better unit out there?
Let me know what you guys think?
John

well hearing the fuel pump is pretty difficult when your are cranking.
Personally I'd say make sure the engine isnt flooded, and if it isnt, I'd short the fuel pump out and see if it pumps, if it does you've got a problem with your circuit opening relay.

If the pump is bad one of the best is the MSD 2225. 43GPH. From summit racing it is around $80.00
Here is a picture.

Very good information.
Pulled the spark plugs, all of them were dry.
SO, I broke out the shop manual to find the location to 'short circuit' the fuel pump circuit.
Its on the passenger side and has a 2 wire connector with a boot simular to that on the ignitor connector.
SO I 'short circuit' the fuel pump circuit, and sure enough the pump came on. TADA the pump was pumping fuel.
Next I went ahead and crank the engine over and the car started. DAMN IT wish I would have known about the 'jumper' location before today.
I pulled the jumper and the continued to run, it started everytime now with out the jumper, so what do I do know? Think the pump is bad... intermittent?
I am going run wiring to dash light from the fuel pump connector, and wiring to the 'short circuit' location to a dash switch for the time being.
thanks for your input, save me a lot of time.

I wouldn't call it lucky, I still don't know why it didn't start while on the Autox Grid.
I would rather have it fail completely, than this intemittent start- won't start problem.
Like I said, I will do some wiring and add a switch to the jumper terminal, but I got a new pump coming as well.

Paul, it looks like the MSD 2225. 43GPH is what I will go with, cause Mazda Motorsports wants $250 for a new GSL-SE fuel pump.
DAMN....
Anything I need to buy extra parts of, because I don't think its going to be PLUG in and DRIVE solution?
Is there enough fuel line or anything else I need to get?

Well I just thought of something. I'm using a 86' engine which has a pulsation dampener on the fuel rail. The -SE has one on the fuel pump. I don't know if it would make a difference without it. I don't think it would; but that might be somthing that you would have to buy after. The MSD pump will fit in the stock location. You will need about a 12"-16" 5/16 HP fuel line. To run from the pump to the filter. I can take a picture of my setup if you want.
Humm, as to the pulsation dampener thing; you might be able to use a fuel rail from a 86'-88'. I don't know it it will fit.
Here is the link for the fuel pump.

Actually SE has a pulsation dampner on the fuel rail. SO you shouldn't have a problem.
