need help wiring starter

i know there has to be threads on this, but im in too big of a rush to search. i have to leave this thread then go to my 3rd shift job.

im wanting to start my long awaited project tomorrow and basically all i have left to do is wire up the starter. there are only 3 places on the starter to mount wires(the two studs with nuts and the prong). there are 4 wires though, two small wires and two larger gauge wires. i may be mistaken, but doesnt the negative from the battery mount to the starter, or am i wrong? if not, where should i mount it? how about on an engine to tranny bolt? i have pics of all of the wires.

there is also two other wires( a red and a green) that im not sure where they go. i assume they are for the reverse lights(?). where do they go though? there are two places where they can be attached to the tranny, but which is the correct one? one of the places is at the front of the tranny and the other is more towards the rear near the shifter.

also, on the positive and negative wires from the battery isnt the positive supposed to be the one that is black with a yellow stripe? well my car confuses me as my black and yellow wire has a place where the rubber is stripped and its mounted agains the drivers side fender well, like a grounding point. also, the all black wire doesnt do that at all and freely moves around. with that being the case shouldnt the all black be the positive? cause if the positive were to openly connected to the firewall wouldnt that cause problems?

one last thing, theres a large gauge wire that runs from the back of the fusible links, does that connect to the positive or negative terminal?

The negative cable goes thru the long starter bolt that is feed thru from the engine area.
Meaning the head of the bolt is in the engine compartment and the cable goes to it then into the starter to secure it.
The solid black wire sounds like the positive. the one with the stripe if it is stripped back and mounts at the fenderwell is the negative.
The large black wire from the fusable links is for power and goes to the positive cable.
The multi colored wires should go to the front portion of the tranny. Do you have a later model trans that has 2 switches, one on the driverside and one on the passenger side.

i think i have figured it out. im going to mount the negative on one of the engine to tranny bolts or the starter bolt. i was thinking maybe the engine to tranny bolt thats kind of under the starter. its an 80 tranny so ill connect the wires to the front connecter. hopefully this thing will srat up today

Big black w/yellow is ground. Any bolt that secures the engine/trans will work.
Big black no stripe, positive. Hooks to one of the lugs back of starter, the one that does not have the strap going inside the starter.
Large wire of fusible links, one end goes to positive battery post, other end to alt and ignition switch.
There should be a large (10ga or so) wire, black w/white or yellow stripe, and a white plastic covered spade connector, that goes on the spade for the starter solenoid.
I can't really help on those other wires you mentioned.

OK! Now I dont mean to jack this thread here, but should all first gens have a ground wire running to the starter? I have had a problem with my starter for years now where occasionally I have to try to start a bunch because all it will do is make a grinding sound until sometime it finally catches....definately embarassing when I have to turn the key 30 times before it turns over..the kicker is it has happened on 2 engines(flywheels) and 2 new starters. I had planned one of these days to run a ground to the starter to see if it helps, but now I see this picture of a ground to the starter!. My ground wire goes from the battery to the body to the engine block (behind beehive oil cooler on the '85)...Should I definately have that ground cable?

Your ground as described is hooked up correctly.

Your non catching starter is just a bad starter. I once went thru 7 aftermarket starters of the same brand that kept doing the same thing.
