Question Need Help W/ Tranny Tailhousing!

Hey guys,

For those of you that haven't seen my struggle with my 5 spd. transmission I've been having trouble with the shifter spring. Well, I believe that I finally have corrected my problem with the shifter spring, thanks to carl and bouis, except in order to do so I had to remove the tailhousing from the tranny. Now I have a new problem... I can't get it back on!

The haynes manual is really pathetic on this aspect of the transmission, and hasn't been much help. All it says is to push the shift rod all the way forward and lean it over when you install the tailhousing. Well for some reason when I do this my tailhousing doesn't mount up right to the rest of the tranny. It is like it is cocked and the bolt holes don't line up at all. They are probably an inch off all the way around. If I do get the tailhousing to mount up right then the shift rod is pushed all the way back inside the shifter housing, probably because the shift rod isn't meshing right with whatever the heck is inside there. There is no way that you would be able to install the shifter again because the socket for the shifter is so far back inside the housing. Something is obviously off. I'm pretty sure that the shift rod is what is causing the problems here. For some reason it is like the end of the shift rod doesn't want to fit back together right with the gear selectors? ( <--- forgive me I don't know what they are called. )

If anyone has some detailed info on how to put the tailhousing back on the tranny correctly PLEASE help me! I want to get this dumb tranny back together so that I can get on to bigger and better things... I have spent far too much time on it.

Hmm... make sure all of the selectors are in the "neutral" position -- not up or down. Put the shift rod right on the middle ones and slip the tail housing over it. You can't get that block back on, right?

You can rotate the shift rod till it falls down a little, then slip the block over it, get a hold of the rod with something, (I used needle nose pliers and a drill bit) and pull it through the block and into place until the threaded hole is where it should be. Then stick that bolt back in it. Make sure you try all six gears before you mount the tranny.

There might be an easier way, but that's how I did it. All I can say is that you will get it, if you keep trying...

Sorry I can't be of more help.

Okay... I think I may be taking the wrong approach with this then. I had the steel block already bolted on to the end of the shift rod while I was trying to install the tailhousing. You are saying that the block should be bolted on last after the tailhousing is already installed, right? I think that may be what was causing my problems.

How do I tell if the tranny is in neutral? I guess this is my only problem now (hopefully). If I took a picture of the selectors would you be able to tell me if it is in neutral or not? I have no idea how those selectors work, or really where the shift rod is even supposed to sit at on them. You are saying that the shift rod just goes in between all of the selectors? I'm not positive that I had the tranny in neutral when I took the tailhousing off... I'm pretty sure that I did though....

Each of the three selectors has three positions. There's "up," "middle," and "down." Middle is neutral.

So, if you have all three in "middle," the tranny is in neutral. It doesn't matter what it was in when you took the housing off.

Jamie, yes you install the block on but dont bolt it on till last so you can manipulate the rod. If you would read the FSM like I suggested, you would see thats the correct way to disassemble and re assemble it.
