Need help stat, you wiring geniuses!!!

My fuel pump stopped working. It was something to do with the wiring, because when I hard wired it straight to the battery, it was fine.

So, I bought a solenoid and switch kit.

I wired the power to the solenoid straight to the battery. I wired the "on" wire in with the radio wire... I figured, hey, the radio only works when the key is on, so that's perfect.

WRONG!

When I go to start the car, it kills all the power to the radio, therefore, it's turning off my switch that controls my fuel pump. So, everytime I turn the car to on, the fuel pump runs, but when I turn the key to "start", it stops the pump.

I do not want it set up so that I have to manually turn the pump on and off every time I get out of the car. I need a location to wire in the red "on" wire from my switch to something that is only on when the car is on, but stays on when the car goes to "start". Is there any place you guys can think of to wire it in to?

wire it to accessory ..you never said what amperage the pump would draw...frankly I would use a switch but what you want is power when you turn the key..I am fairly sure that accessory will give you 12 volts with key on..someone else will post if I AM GIVIN WRONG INFO...if it draws alot try the empty fuse space in the engine bay as a place to put the fuse (my way) and run a switch to inside..put a push button to where the Cruise would have been..It's very accessable ..right at the key so you would not be as forgetfull if it was in another more non-friendly location..somethin to think about..good luck to ya

oh the reason it stops the pump is because the starter is drawin the power in the start position ..come to think of it accessory ..may do the same so i would be considering the hardwire directly to 12 volts with a switch convenient location thing ..that will work for sure..the circuit won't have anything else on it..that radio thing..lucky you didn't fry anything there ..what if you didn't like the SONG ..no gas!!!

Well, I was able to jump the fuel pump using the trick in another thread, so I got the fuel pump to work... But the car won't start.

you should wire them both direct with a toggle for the fuel pump and push button starter, both kindof hidden under the dash.

I ran a lead from the connector you have to jump to a switch (where the choke pull used to be) and then back to the other side of the connector. While your car is on you will have continues power to the pump and during starting (as that circut really is for the pump) I only turn the switch off if I'm doing something to the car where I need it on but not running. For safty sake you wire it to an oil pressure switch, so if your car dies the pump dies.

To '69, on most (I think all really) cars when the key is in the "start" posistion it's wired so nothing needed to start the car is powered focusing all power to the starter, pump and misc.
