need help with my new -SE

I just picked up a BEAUTIFUL black GSL-SE... It's got a few minor problems though:

wait, first, some background: it's an '85.. says it's a GSL-SE, has the suspension, it's fully loaded with leather interior, has the wheels, has the badges, has a wing, etc.. but it's got a ported 12A in it.. So somebody's swapped it.. there's no FI parts anywhere, just 12a stuff.. I dunno though, I've only owned one FB before and it never had a motor, hehehe

it's been flooded (badly), when i got it the plugs were out, they're fouled super bad.. I've got some new ones though (always keep some around, my 10ae munches 'em!) so the P.O. was trying to get it going and killed the battery... He hooked up the jumper cables wrong and fried something. apparently something near the battery (small grey box with wires coming out of both ends?> I don't have a pic) smoked.. When I put a new battery in the car, I turned the headlights on and they got power to go up, but wouldn't go back down. They worked, too.. NOTHING else worked/works tho.. not even the 4 ways, NOTHING. What got fried?

Anyways, the car is suppossed to run and drive fine, once I get all of the oil out of it (he poured oil in the combustion chambers), get some new plugs, and fix the electrics.. what could be wrong?

I'll have pics tomorrow or the next day, btw..

Sounds like fuseable link fried. Junkyard best place to get or do a search, I think they are 14 or 16 gauge wire covered with a cloth sleeve, can get at local parts store or use a wire to get you going. Replace that then pull the plugs, turn over the engine (remove spark plug wires away from the soon to be gas cloud). Replace plugs with new ones, try it, if not have some one pull you and she should fire right up. Good luck, too bad someone pulled the 13B, I love my SE and its a hunk of ****.

where is the fusable link located? I'm not too worried about it, I drove around for most of the summer with a piece of wire replacing the main fuse on my FC...

my -SE is beautiful, I fell in love with it instantly...

Stock SE's (which yours sounds like it isn't) will have 2 'blocks' of Fusible Links mounted to the driver's side shock tower just behind the battery. The top is for the fuel injection system (for Ignition and Computer), and the bottom is for headlights, engine electrical, and something that I don't recall right now.

The fusible links are a specific type of wire which is designed to carry a high initial load, and then function as a standard connector during more normal loads. If you simply put two crimp terminals on some 16ga wire, you're going to have a car fire.

Get the right fusible links from a junkyard or Mazdatrix (cheap, about $7 each), and keep some spares around so that if you ever run reverse polarity through the battery cables again (not you, prior owner), then you can swap them out easily and quickly.

The Fusible Links provide a buffer against you doing something that will totally fry the car out, such as the ECU or something just as important.

I'd be curious to see how your PO hooked up the 12A, since the SE's were setup with high pressure fuel injection fuel pumps (40-60psi), and don't lend themselves well to going to carb without a new fuel pump. Additionally, the airflow meter was designed to be used with the EFI system along with a O2 sensor in the exhaust to run closed loop fuel mapping.

If you have all the necessary parts, you might have an easy project to find a 4-port 13b that you can drop in and reinstall the EFI system to it for about 135hp stock, and about 160-180 with minor mods. Good luck,

it's been ported and has a full exhaust allready.. it shouldn't be too bad

it's ... weird.
Yeah, I dunno how it's set up either.. I don't think carbs like 60PSI of fuel pressure... And I don't think that frying the ECU will affect this motor too much...
Both those blocks of fusable links are there. I'll talk to the junkyard tomorrow and if they don't have any then it's off to the dealer..
