to get the fly wheel off...take a rubber mallet, and whack the flywheel to one side, near the teeth, but dont hit the teeth. you can use a metal hammer if your careful, but try the rubber mallet first

I just cut a small piece of 2X4 and put held it on the outer egde and used a metal hammer. Worked great. Just start in one spot and work your way around until it comes loose. Don't be affraid to hit it hard if you have a piece of wood there.

Also whatever you do make sure that you put the 54mm nut back on a couple of turns before you do this so that when it does come loose it doesn't fall off on the floor or worse yet your foot and then the floor.

Take a look at this thread. This is the one I read when I was rebuilding my engine.

we rigged my engine up vertically on the engine hoist and then tied a cement block to the flywheel.. then we all proceeded to beat on it until it broke free.........

You can get a Soft Hammer at some tool stores: it's a big rubber thing with loose lead shot in the head, so it hits the work softly but heavily. I paid $6 for mine, on sale.

Also, a rapid set of hammer blows probably works better to vibrate it off. You can prolly rent an electric handheld (2 hands!) power hammer (Bosch, DeWalt, etc) at a tool rental place. It's like a small version of the jack hammers guys use to ruin the roadway and hold you up when you're in a hurry to get someplace.

Some guys heat the thing with a torch, but I don't like getting that much heat that close to the rear seal.

Wow! thanks for the info! I've never had that problem with the rocker studs on any of my 3 7s, but I'll keep that in mind.
