need help with carb and such (searched, read..no luck)
Here are my problems: (1985 GS)
The engine will start and run (runs at 3000-3500 RPM) with the choke on, as I slowly release the choke the engine starts to backfire and pop and when the choke is all the way in the car just dies (unless I am giving it good amounts of throttle).
I have read the workshop manual and still am without an answer. Does anyone have some suggestions?
The car was broken into so I had to manually use the ignition switch and the last time I started it I forgot to shut off the starter (blew that up nicely)...
So I also need a starter motor, can I just pick up any starter motor that will work for my car or is it mazda specific only?
(I am fairly new to carbuerated engines, although I have taken them apart before on skidoos).

You have a severe vacuum leak; that is most likely associated with the ACV on the side of the manifold (This particular leak is usually the biggest one),
You need a Mazda, model AND YEAR specific starter, as the # of teeth on the flywheel gearrings were different with differnt years. It may have only changed once, I don't know, but I think they all cost the same. I don't know about Canada, but here in the states they are all readily available at larger auto parts chain stores.
