Need Help with A/C on my 85 RX7
I have recently purchased a 1985 RX7 GS and noticed that it does not have the AC compressor and lines installed. In Florida the heat, humidity and the rain are unbearable and a working A/C unit is a must.
I would like to know if the A/C compressor lines and accessories can be purchased and reinstalled on this 20+ year old car? Any help in solving this situation will be greatly appreciated.

There are many members who have tossed thier ac. If they removed it without tearing up the lines, install whould not be that big of a pita. The hardest part will be installing the core under the dash and the controls in the cabin. If you go this route, replace all of the o-rings, the dryer/reciever and probably the compressor.

Does anyone know where I can get a new compressor for an FB? I found a couple of sites selling remans, but I was just looking for a new one.
Also, does anyone know if the FC or FD compressor can be used on the FB? I can find FC compressors easily, and if I can use that, it would make things quite easier.

I just removed the A/C from an 85 SE and an 80 GS, would be willing to sell them. I don't know what they are worth, but make a reasonable offer and I can send them to you. I did not remove the core under the dash, but would be willing to do that too.

I have The compressor (w/ mount), lines and Condenser(?). I removed them some time ago and were working at the time. I'll sell them pretty cheap, but shipping might be the issue.. the compressor is HEAVY!

The first thing to determine is besides the compressor and lines missing, what else is missing.
Is the mounting bracket for the A/c still attached to the engine? Is the a/c condenser there?
Did the car come with a/c in the 1st place?
If it did come with A/c then check and see if the evaporator core is still there. On the right side of the firewall there will be 2 lines coming thru from the interior of the car. If they are sticking out then the evap core is still there.
In getting a used a/c compressor make sure it either comes off a car that still has the system sealed or if someone took it off and taped off the suction/discharge ports off the compressor. Always buy a NEW receiver drier. Make sure ALL the o'rings are replaced.
The electrical power wire for the a/c compressor is located on the left side and is a single wire. Even if the car did not come with A/c the wire is still there from the factory.
After all the components have been installed then take it too a good a/c shop. They will need to flush the system and evacuate and recharge it. A good shop will also leak test and check vent temps for effiency. As far as types of freon to use. Either stick with the original R12 which may be the best choice for you because it is the most efficent at cooling.
Draw back that it is expensive. Only other recommended is R134a, about 85% efficent as R12 but has drawbacks such as. The molecules are much smaller and does leak more often then R12 does. It is also harder to find leaks. the pressures are somewhat higher then R12 and is more efficent with a larger A/c condenser. If you go t his route i would recommend a auxillary electric fan in front of the condenser for added cooling of the condenser to keep pressures down.

RX7DOCTOR,
Quick question... Assuming that my car is missing most of the components you mention, and consodering that it did have a working A/C unit at some point, do you have an idea, even ballpark, as to how much would a reputable A/C shop may charge to have all components and services perforformed to have a good, reliable, working A/C system? Thanks again for your valuable help.

Installing the components is not that difficult. A shop could easily charge you as much, probably more, than the ac cost when new. I could provide and install the parts for 2-300, then let an ac mechanic evacuate and charge the system. Providing only the engine bay parts are missing. If the car never had ac, that could easily add another 200+
I may have most of the engine bay parts, including a good compressor. You will need to find an o-ring kit and a new reciever/dryer. I found them on eBay for my 2nd gen.

As my esteemed colleague Trochoid has stated having a shop install all of the components
would be expensive.
As far as you rpic's goes, i cannot see anything A/C related in the pics. Did you check the right side firewall to see if there were 2 lines (Steel) coming thru from inside of the car.
If there is then the A/C evap core is in the car and as Trochoid has stated that is sort of a PITA if you have never done one. Underneath the Access panel between the radiator and the front of the vehicle would be the A/C condenser if it is still there. You can just look in front of the vehicle below the bumper and see if there is what looks like a mini radiator before the radiator.

Yes to both pics. That means that the evap core is there and that is the biggest PITA to do if you have never done one. So you have the evap core, condenser, partial hoses. I'm assuming the pics are from your car?
You need the A/c bracket to mount the compressor to the side of the motor. A compressor either new, reman or off a car that it was working recently and that was sealed up after it was removed. A new receiver drier. The missing A/C hoses, a A/C belt. And decide whether you are going to charge it with R12 which i recommend because of the amount of heat and humidity in Florida. Put all new o'rings. Take it to a shop, have it flushed. Evacuate and recharge. This is of course after all the components have been installed. Thought you were getting away easy, lol.

Anyone know where I can get a piccolo style condensor that fits FBs?
I'd like to get a 134a specific condensor to take full advantage of my A/C, but I can't seem to find one. I don't want a parallel because I want something flushable. The stock condensor just doesn't give enough tubing to cool 134a as much as I'd like.
BTW, I got all of my new A/C stuff from www.ackits.com Brand new compressor for $200. It's beautiful.
The only things stopping me from getting my A/C running are a condensor and finding a single or dual stage vaccum pump to clean out my system before putting it all together.
