when i removed my rats nest i blocked off both shutter valve outlets....throughout the procedure i had some trouble getting some of the hoses off but all you have to do is get some pliers and grab around the hose overtop of the metal outlet and twist it around a bit as you pull at the same time and that should do it.

there are hose pliers. these usually work pretty good at removing old hoses with minimal damage done to the hose itself.

or you can just use needle nose pliers, and get a bit of extra vacuum hose at your local part store. It's usually a good idea to replace some of the 20 year old crappy hose anyway. The only thing I'd say is that before you go replacing any of the other hoses, wait until the car's running properly. Then swap out the old hose for new hose one at a time, running the car in between to make sure that new hose is ok. I realize you obvioulsy have to fix this problem first, but I wish you luck.

Vacuum leaks really REALLY suck
