Need help

I started the car and it died. It seems to have no power to the fuel pump (no voltage at the plug behind the drivers seat). If it has anything to do with it, I was going to look why the tack quit on the way home. Can you point me in a direction to troubleshoot this?

BTW - 85 12a 5 speed

Thanks

check your fuses. I believe there's only power to the stock pump when your cranking it, then when it's crunk. with just the key on it shouldn't be running... Not positive, but i think that's how it works.

If it only runs when cranking, what supplies the fuel when driving down the road??

And what's a "crunk"?

Can I just throw 12v to the pump and be happy?

On the 1st gens ('79- '85) the fuel pump definitely runs when the key is in the "on" position, ie: warning lights lit but engine not cranking. If the stereo and fan are off you can hear the pump--- unless it isn't working. I'm not sure about '86 models and up.

Check fuses first. If the one for the fuel pump is kaput, replace it--- along with the fuel filter. A clogged fuel filter could not only cause the car to fuel-starve but could also put undue load on the fuel pump, causing it to draw more current--- and possibly blow the fuse.

Another way to confirm that the engine is actually receiving fuel is to disconnect the incoming fuel line from the carb and insert it into a container. Then turn the key to the "on" position. If fuel pours into the container the problem is not the fuel pump.

I hot wired mine to the pos side of the coil ,ran it along under the mats and out the box to the pump. I like crunk, sort of like croked.

Thanks.

I did just replace the filter. I will run a hot wire to it in the morning, I just needed to know if it took a full 12v and that it was OK to let it run all the time. I think I’ll put a switch in an inconspicuous place while I’m at it for theft deterrent.

And I will use the word "crunk" from now on.
