Need Emissions Help!!!

Newbeeee, only had the car 4 hours, please help.

I'm passing emissions with my 1979 RX7 on everything except for the hydrocarbons!! I'm .91 over.....

I passed the emissions on the CO2 just by putting in premium fuel, and i've been told that replacing one of the cats would help.

Any advice before I take it to the dealership for a diagnostic test???

Please help ASAP -- I'd appreciate any information at all.

Thanks!!

Had the same issue with my 79. This car has no Cat. Converter, it has a thermal reactor and heat exchanger! the heat exchanger looks like a cat. converter but is there to control the heat generated by the thermal reactor. I made sure timing was at spec, verified both vacuum advance units worked and verified float level was spot on. I also replaced spark plugs and points. Added 1 gallon denatured alcohol to fuel tank and 8 gal. gas. Drove car for 30 minutes prior to going to the smog station. It smoked like crazy for about 15 min. then cleared up. Passed the Calif. test 3 points under max for HC's. Also verify engine is getting to proper temperature, running too cool will raise readings, also verify choke blade is vertical in the carb air horn when engine is at normal temperature. After the test, I gently drove it to gas station and filled the tank. Alcohol adds oxygen to the fuel burning it cleaner. Hope this helps.

If youve only had the car 4 hours, then you need to take some time and check things out like air filter condition, timing, sparkplug condition, vacuum hoses,ect,ect,ect.....

Rotaries can, and do, make a LOT of HC's in their exhaust.Thats part of why the thermal reactors work so well. But they wont work right if the engine isnt fully warmed up and the control system for the thermal reactor isnt all functioning.

Like Carnut said, you dont have any cats on the 79 from the factory. So, in order for the thermal reactor/heat exchanger to do all the work, the engine/control system must be complete and in-tune.
