Need belt/starter help

Today I am finally repairing my alternator belt. I got it all taken apart just fine and now have 2 belts on. I have the AC belt on also, except it has a litle kink in it, where the belt is twisted 90 degrees or so. I thought I could just re-hook the battery and give the engine a little crank to get the kink around to where I could get to it, or the kink would work itself out. Well, when I turned the key to "on" all the dash lights and everything came on normally, but then when I went to crank it to "start" all of the electronics and all of the dash lights went off. Does any one have any ideas on the problem? Is the kink in the belt causing enough resistance that the starter can't turn? or is there something else that I am just over looking? Thanks in advance for any help.

was it starting fine before you changed the belts? if it hasn't been running for a while maybe the battery is just dead

The kink has nothing to do with the lights or starting. If you disconneted the battery cables prior to woking on the alt, as you should have, make sure they are clean tightened securely.
