n00b question about my 85 gsl-se

i just recently picked up a gsl-se (info on the motor is in my signature) thats SP and has some other mods, i was just curious, someone told me i could rev it out to 8000 but the speedometer shows 7, then the red zone, and when i go past 7000 it seems as if i shouldnt rev it farther. idk, it could be in my head, but i dont want to blow the motor.

2500 miles on it or so.

lmk what u guys think. its a S4 motor.

obviously the original tach is meant for a stock motor/power band, so you can disregard the red zone at this point.have you dyno'd the car?find out where the power band falls off and see if its even worth spining to 8k, you could be adding more strain to the motor than neccesary. were there any supporting internal mods, or is the motor just a SP stock rebuild? for the most part ive read that 81+ rotating assembly's are balanced to 9k from the factory, im not saying they will survive forever spinning that high

obviously yes, factory tach= no go. all i know about the internals were basically what i was told, could be more, or could be left at what i was told... light weight flywheel n a sp. thats all i know.

the car needs to be diald in, i know someone with a dyno, its just a matter of when.

thanks guys. i just wanted to know if there was anyone else out there with a similar set up, who revs to 7500 or 8000 or something, not that i do on an everyday basis, just that id like to know my limits.

A few blasts to redline helps with that carbon build up our cars are known for. The highest I've taken my GSL-SE is 8K, but that was only once. Every other time, on rare occassion, I've taken it up to 7K then shift.

how about when you miss the shift at 7 and peg the tac for a second.

S4 engines have the same redline limits as the SEs, but they won't hit 8k due to fuel cut, hint. Unless the engine has been modded during the build with the correct parts, 8k will tear it up sooner than later.

What is redline for an engine? You can look at it 2 different ways. 1, when it quits making power and shifting to the next gear produces faster times. 2, when it blows.

I can tell you right now that your powerband will start around the 6K mark and stop near the redline, or around that. Rotary engines are high revvers and because of their small size, their power is up at the top. Very top.

Well, you can't really. Best way to improve your throttle response is to just get a K&N filter and get some work done up to have a custom made intake-tube setup. I'm looking to have a custom box made for my cone filter and to have a duct lead from it to the front of the radiator to make it a forced air intake.

I don't know if you have a turbo on that thing or not, but turbos are usually good for torque, and since most will have max boost at 3K, that's a plus.

I have an 85GSLSE that I would redline or better almost every shift for many years! I got 162,000 miles before I yanked that engine because of a seal leaking anti-freeze. I drive them real hard and they love it! Of course you need to be willing to get a new engine if you blow it no matter how you drive. One thing I will say is that I have driven every single mazda I've owned (7) like that and got at least 150,000 miles out of every one of them! They definitely are one of the most fun cars to drive ever made!

If you're interested in a fairly easy cold-air intake mod for your SE, give me your e-mail address and I'll send you the info I did on my '85. It was an immediate improvement in performance, and pretty cheap.
